NEW PRE-SHOWER POSTER CAMPAIGN A new publicity campaign is under way to encourage showering before entering a swimming pool. The move comes from the Department of Health in the form of posters to be sent to local authority pools. The move has won praise from within the specialist industry as one of the key factors in the fight against infections in water.

WATER HEALTH

CONFERENCE ATTRACTS MORE DELEGATES The 2011 World Aquatic Health Conference is set to attract the largest number of delegates for many years – an indication of the growing research into water health issues. Pre- registrations are 98% higher than at the same stage in 2010. Conference organiser Michelle Kavanaugh said: “This is a sign that the best and brightest are focused on innovating toward growth.” Held from 12-14 October in Seattle, the conference will feature 45 seminars.

EUROPE SEARCHES HARD FOR BEST NEW PRODUCT OF THE YEAR This autumn’s major European trade show, Piscina BCN in Barcelona is sending out a special plea in the search for Europe’s most innovative and sustainable new products. All the products exhibited at the Spanish show are entitled to take part in the awards and for the first time this year the show is also including projects that have been completed in the last two years. The awards consist of a diploma which will be presented at a gala dinner during the course of the show. The deadline for entering is 15 September.

Hanovia UV disinfection systems are now treating nine pools, including the UK’s largest floatation pool, at Nirvana Spa in Berkshire, one of the UK’s most prestigious spa facilities. There are currently nine pools, each filled with pure spring water drawn from 700 feet beneath the ground. Each pool is treated with a Hanovia UV system: Pulse-8, the Surf Room, the Roman Room, the Plunge Pool, the Relaxation Pool, the Fitness Pool, the Celestial Floatation Pool, the outside Mini Spas and the outside Deck Level Pool.

“The Celestial Floatation Pool, the UK’s largest hydrotherapy pool, is unusual as it contains salt imported from the Dead Sea,” commented Neil Phelps, Nirvana’s Maintenance Manager. “We match the specific gravity of the Dead Sea, and this high salt concentration makes the water very buoyant and floating in the pool is perfect for spinal alignment. Bathers in the warm (35°C), mineral-rich waters are removed from most external stimuli and a gentle current gives the sensation of floating in space. This provides both mental and physical benefits and many sports men and women, including international rugby players, skiers and rowers, use the pool to enhance their performance and reduce their injury time.” “UV allows us to run the chlorine at

the right levels and there is no way we’d be able to achieve the level of water purity without it. As the water temperature is kept at a constant 35°C, which is higher than in leisure pools, there is an increased risk of infection from microorganisms such as bacteria and moulds which thrive in warm water. Microbiological control is a key aspect of the water quality and UV plays an important part in that control and bacteriological checks are carried out regularly,” added Neil. UV is effective at killing any bacteria, viruses or moulds in the water, including cryptosporidium and its spores, which are chlorine- resistant. Another major advantage of UV is that it considerably reduces the amount of chlorine required to maintain hygiene levels. This reduces

problems associated with chlorine by-products such as chloramines, which are formed when free chlorine reacts with sweat or urine in pool water. Trichloramines in particular are powerful irritants which are responsible for eye and respiratory complaints and the unpleasant ‘chlorine smell’ commonly associated with indoor pools. Each UV system installed at Nirvana Spa consists of a stainless steel chamber containing a high intensity Hanovia UVLux lamp, which is housed in a special quartz sleeve to protect it from the pool water.

NEW £21M PODS POOL COMPLEX OPENS TO RAVE REVIEWS be one of ‘sheer delight’.

The centre is made up of five pods and has been designed to blend into the surrounding landscape. The building comprises five pods and inside is an eight lane 25m swimming pool, training pool, splash pool with a gym, two exercise studios and sports halls.

One of the largest domes houses the spectacular new pool. Two exercise studios, a sauna, spa bath, steam room, creche and café are also included.

Cllr John Briggs, Deputy Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “There are some fantastic offers to entice new members. Though I think once people see the building for themselves; they’ll not need much encouragement. “The Pods is an incredibly exciting

building. A great deal of hard work has gone into the project and I’m sure when people see it, they’ll appreciate all it has to offer,” he added. The majority of the £21m funding for the centre has come from North Lincolnshire Council, with Yorkshire Forward contributing £7m and Sport England £750,000.
