33 DELIVERING TO MEMBERS

BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes reflects on key issues raised in his visits to member companies and gives the latest update on SPATEX

isiting members is always a pleasurable part of my role and having recently been to companies as far afield as Glasgow and Devon, various themes repeat, so it is heartening to know that we are delivering on some of the items of most importance to members and others we continue to work towards. Key themes from these meetings are:

V

• Communication (especially to the consumer) • Services for members • Training

Getting effective communication to the consumer will always be a major task and working

with PR agencies, such as BOTTLE PR will open up avenues for our industry to deliver our messages. Part of the strategy this year to communicate more with the consumer is by attending relevant shows. SPATA has been doing this at prestigious events, such as Grand Designs Live in London and Ideal Homes Scotland and news of these events are covered elsewhere in this issue. There will always be a pressing need for the consumer to know more about the value of why they should choose a company in Trade Association membership and these benefits of working with companies include working to Standards and abiding by a Code of Ethics. Members can play their part by promoting their own Trade Association membership, but there is also a role for PIP to liaise with SPATA and BISHTA. Services for members continue to improve, with the pages in SPN offering an invaluable method of communicating changes. The weekly e-newsletters for SPATA and BISHTA members are also a regular method of updating members. A number of member factsheets continue to be developed that also provide important information. All of this information is available in the member’s area of the SPATA and BISHTA websites.

In terms of the training element above, a series of water hygiene management and dangerous goods transportation courses are being provided. I am also delighted to confirm that there will be social media training and there is an article on page 38 on this subject.

LIFETIME OF ENJOYMENT FOLDERS

The attractive Lifetime of Enjoyment folders are being well received by those members that do not already have their own materials. The folders enhance the first impressions when providing paper materials to clients and therefore adds to the overall professionalism. The folders give members an opportunity to customise the materials that are given to customers, when distributing information packs or providing quotes.

the future direction of the show – including a special focus group event for exhibitors and a survey for visitors.

A number of visits to alternative exhibition venues have been undertaken as part of our research and our findings will be shared at a SPATEX focus group event planned for 6 October. All exhibitors from last year will be contacted, as will a number of previous exhibitors and any new companies for the 2012 show will also be included. I am delighted that 75 exhibitors have already signed up for the 2012 show, which is very positive news.

September will be a busy month, with SPATA attendance at LIW and then in the same week will be the AGM’s for BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA and there is also the anniversary dinner. More news on the AGM’s can be found in the Pipeline page.

The recently reported drought situation in East Anglia and then the heavy rainfall, highlight the balance that our industry faces. We will always be looking to have sunny weather, as this reminds people of the joy of being near water. However, the longer we have sunny weather without rainfall, the more likely the country is to have a need to conserve water. Therefore, we should continue to promote water conservation practices to our customers to play our part and a Code of Practice has recently been published by UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) outlining how water companies should respond when there are water shortages. Finally, this issue sees another BISHTA member, Grizzly Bear Hot Tubs and SPATA member, Triogen in the spotlight and please remember that if you have any news, we would like to consider it for our pages within SPN.
