SafetyFlooring AUG 2011 SPN THE MAELOR SCHOOL GETS NEW EASIER TO MAINTAIN AND SAFER POOL ROOM FLOOR

school realised that a complete overhaul was required to maintain health and safety standards.

John Highnam from Tact made an assessment of the work needed, including cutting slots into the floor to improve the drainage and grinding off areas of the floor which had risen up. Tact’s chemical resistant coating, Poolcoat was specified to seal the floor once the repairs were completed. The whole floor area was then finished with free-draining Pedestrian TactTiles in light blue and red, with Safety Yellow Edging in the doorways.

The Maelor School near Wrexham had problems with their swimming pool room floor area. The floor was finished in

from kiddie pools to über cool private member leisure facilities and many safe flooring solutions come in at prices to satisfy any budget.

INDIVIDUAL SUNDECK

Looking for a safe, non-slip flooring that is free draining, cool and comfortable, versatile, low maintenance, hard-wearing and individual? Look no further than Sundeck – a rubber chip flooring that is now available as an installation service from Certikin. It’s high quality, attractive and functional and suitable for a multitude of applications. Certikin, using its team of dedicated contractors, will arrange a pre-site visit for a quotation and then schedule the full installation. A super-safe flooring, Sundeck is made up of a mixture of coloured rubber granules and a two- part epoxy resin. The rubber granules are ground from virgin sheet rubber and the epoxy resin has a base of inert pigments hardened by a polyamine adduct in Benzyl Alcohol, therefore hard curing and water resistant. It is laid 6mm thick onto almost any clean, dry substrate such as screed, concrete (if trowel finished) or timber. Being flexible, it is excellent at covering uneven or cracked surfaces. The substrate should include provision for any drainage required since water passes through the Sundeck and will flow into the drainage provided at the substrate level. Sundeck is offered in 10 attractive colours; motifs and colourways can also be incorporated. Aside from pool flooring, it is also suitable for changing rooms, patios, corridors and leisure areas.

THE ASSESSMENT OF SLIPPERINESS: THE HSE APPROACH

The law requires that floors must not be so slippery that they put people’s safety at risk in the workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992). It was thought that the characteristics of floor surface materials needed for satisfactory slip resistance were difficult to assess. However, research carried out by HSL, in conjunction with the UK Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG) and the British Standards Institution, has shown they are not. The slipperiness of flooring materials can be accurately assessed by using commercially available,

portable scientific test instruments. On behalf of HSE, HSL has developed a reliable and robust test method using these instruments to assess floor surface slipperiness. The method has been used as the basis of significant HSE and local authority action, from advice to improvement notices and prosecution.
