Power-pack for cosmetic application Univar extends distribution agreement
Univar Inc. has expanded its long-standing relationship with Dow and has signed an agreement to distribute its complete portfolio of speciality personal care ingredients in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The agreement includes Dow’s new EcoSmooth™
conditioning polymers, which were showcased by
Dow and Univar at in-cosmetics. Univar has distributed Dow’s personal care ingredients across Europe for many years, including in the UK and Ireland, but this is the first time it will distribute the full personal care range in this region. Univar is marketing the full range of legacy Rohm and Haas personal care specialties: Acudyne™ fixative polymers, Aculyn™ polymers, Opulyn™
rheology modifiers, Soltex™ water-proofing opacifiers and SunSpheres SPF boosters.

The flowering heads of Calendula officinalis, herb of the year 2008 and commonly known as marigold, provide a powerful cocktail of active ingredients for cosmetic application. Modern analysis shows that the supercritical calendula extract contains about 20% faradiol monoesters, which represent the actual anti- inflammatory and anti-oedematous components, and therefore should be taken for standardisation and quality control of calendula preparations. Their effect is supported by further triterpene monools, especially taraxasterols and amyrins which represent another 20% of the product. The supercritical calendula extract is a rich source of phytosterols, mainly stigmasterol, sitosterol, fucosterol and lanosterol which together make up 12% of the product. Phytosterols are well known for their photo-protecting, anti-ageing and wound healing properties. Finally the extract contains carotenoids which provide scavenging activity against free radicals. This perfect blend of bioactive components makes the supercritical calendula extract an ideal ingredient for natural cosmetics with protective and restorative efficacy, already in low concentration.
