SCAM ALERT
ecently my mom was a victim of the “Grandparent scam.” An individual posing as her grandson, even using his name, said he was in a car accident in Mexico and needed $3500 to keep from going to jail. He provided her detailed information on where to wire the money through Western Union in Mexico City. Taken by surprise my mother rushed to the bank, withdrew the cash and found the closest Western Union provider. The imposter used a fake I.D. and picked up the money within 40 minutes. In Mexico the MTCN number does not have to be

provided. Somehow, probably through a social networking site like Facebook, the thief collected information to pull this scheme off. Per the Western Union Fraud department, this scam has been around for a long time and is in full swing once again. The Federal Trade Commission reports 60,000 reports of this scam were reported in 2010.
IF YOU GET A CALL LIKE THIS,
STAY CALM. HERE ARE A FEW TIPS: • Ask a question only your real grand- child would know (what was the name of their first pet, for example).
• Contact their parents. If someone asks to keep it a secret, that’s a red flag. • Do not send money quickly or secretly. • Refuse to send money through a wire transfer or overnight delivery.
If you feel you’ve been scammed contact your local police or the Federal Trade Commission. Also, contact your state Attorney General’s office. You can report your incident at
naag.org or
ag.ca.gov. In addition, ask all your family to set their social networking privacy settings to “friends only” so it won’t be so easy to get personal information.
