SAN FRANCISCO FINE ART MUSEUMS

ast fall we took a day trip to visit the
de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. There was an exhibit of Impressionist paintings

that we just had to see. Getting there is easy. Take 280 north and, just into the City, when it heads east to the Bay Bridge, stay on Highway One, which turns into 19th Ave and takes you straight to the park. There are excellent directions on the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco website (
www.famsf.org) as well as all the information you would need for a visit. We found ample under- ground parking or you can troll through the park and look for a free
spot and hoof it back to the museum through one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
The new museum is a wonder, a cop- per clad beauty with a soaring 144-foot tower. (If you go, DO NOT miss riding up to the tower. It has the most beauti- ful 360º views of the City that can be found.) The structure’s copper sheath- ing is in the decades-long process of developing its patina, which in time will eventually turn that same delicious
green as the Statue of Liberty. Natural stone, wood and glass help the building to complement its natural surroundings. For this popular event
we had to buy special tickets that cost more than the standard admission price. General daily admission is $11 for adults, $8 for seniors and $7 for stu- dents and youth. Admission for the spe- cial shows such as the current Picasso exhibit range from a low of $15 for youths to $25 for adults but that includes the general admission. We looked at all the options and decided to buy a senior membership for $60, which allowed me to bring in Sylvia as a guest
