and is good for a year. (The same mem- bership allowed me to take my brother, who was visiting from Guam, to the Legion of Honor in the spring to see a great exhibit of Japanese woodcut art.) All in all a pretty good deal if you love the museums. A family membership costs $125 and allows unlimited free admission for two members and two guests to the permanent collections and most special exhibitions at the de Young and the Legion of Honor with unlimited free admission for children in the same household up to age 17.
The special exhibits allow only so many people in at once so your ticket specifies a time in half hour increments. Our entrance time gave us two hours to explore the museum and take in the permanent collection, which is fabulous, fascinating and comprehensive, worth
the trip in its own right.
When we left the museum in mid-afternoon, we motored
THEMOSS BEACH DISTILLERY
down Highway One looking for a place to eat. We were lured in by a series of signs promising the Moss Beach Distillery (
mossbeachdistillery.com) and good food. What we found was treasure. An old distillery that had been a landing spot for bootleggers of the 1920s and the restaurant has an ideal view of the ocean with a deck available if you want to eat outside in good weather. There is even a legend of a ghost, the “Blue Lady,” who haunts the place.
The food was good and the prices listed as “spendy” ($$$) by
Yelp.com.
But for a capper to a very nice day, a day of art and beauty and the best com- pany in the world, I was happy to spend a little.
A little further down Highway One, we turned east up from the ocean on 92, merged onto 280 south and headed home. ~ PM
Of course, my favorite vacation on a budget idea is still to trade houses with a friend in a different city for a week. You get all the comforts of home and your friend gets a vacation too. Be sure to trade “favorite spots” lists too so they can be treated like family everywhere.
