Hollister Downtown Association presents Staycations:

We left Out & About country in late morning planning on lunch when we got there. We aimed for downtown and parked at the Downtown Center Garage (sometimes called the Mason/O’Farrell Garage) on the corner of Mason and O’Farrell. It’s easy to get to, convenient and not too expen- sive if you don’t park all day. And it the best place if you plan on seeing a show at the Geary or Curran Theatres. It is literally around the corner and theatergoers can park for up to five hours for $12. Show your ticket stub upon exiting to receive the special discount.

When I was a student at the American Conservatory Theatre in the early nineteen-seventies, we would often go to David’s Delicatessen a few steps from 450 Geary, which is where the conservatory held classes and ACT shows were rehearsed. We went in but sadly, with new owners and, frankly, lousy food and terrible service, it is nothing like it was. I recommend the Pinecrest Restaurant on the corner of Geary and Mason. It’s cozy and great for people watching with good, reasonably priced food served quickly and cour- teously. We always stop there for dinner when see shows at ACT or the Curran Theatre.

Then we walked down to Union Square where, in 1971- 72 we used to throw down a blanket and sell hand painted leather belts while Bobby Shields entertained the tourists with his masterful mime.

There are all kinds of great stores if you like shopping or, in our case, win- dow-

shopping. Art gal- leries, jewelry, depart-

ment stores, food, everything! Go to www.union- squareshop.com and check it out. After retrieving our car, Chinatown was only a few blocks up a steep Powell Street and then right on California down to a left on Grant. We cruised in and snagged some street parking then got out and shopped. I bought a toy and Sylvia got a beautiful scarf after competing vendors under- cut each other until the price was right.
