SPOKING MY MIND Ready for a Challenge?

I

f you are holding this magazine dur- ing the first few days of the month, STOP! Put down the pages and pro- ceed posthaste to the Morgan Hill Family Bike Ride! You won’t want to miss it! I took part in their inaugural ride last year; all I can say is this ride will fast become a family favorite around Out & About Country!

Are you sad that you won’t be able to make it to this year’s Death Ride, sched- uled for the second weekend of the month? Fear not! The San Benito/ Hollister Death Ride will return on July 10th! Organizer Brian Lucas, of Hollister’s Off The Chain Bikes, tells me that the ride contains three of the tallest mountain peaks in San Benito County: Fremont Peak (about 3100 feet), Lone Tree Road (about 2800 feet), and Quien Sabe Road (about 2500 feet). If you don’t think you can survive 95-100 miles and over 8,000 feet of climbing all in one day, consider just attempting one or two of the peaks, just like in the real Death Ride. Oh, and if you can’t ride, volunteer for SAG support. (Contact Brian for info: 831 636-0802 or otcbike@yahoo.com) Good news! CalTrain is adding more bike cars. If you don’t mind leaving at commuter times, it’s lots of fun to load your bike aboard, enjoy the train ride to any destination to the north, then pedal back to South County! Consider taking the family to the Blossom Hill or Capitol Stations, then enjoy a leisurely, breeze- aided ride along the Coyote Creek Trail, all the way back to Morgan Hill! Speaking of Morgan Hill, did you race fans enjoy their Memorial Day Criterium? It’s so exciting watching the

racers speed by, and what other sport offers every spectator a front row seat? The action continues this month with the Watsonville Criterium! Racing or spec- tating, you can’t go wrong! Great to hear that the garden rail- roaders in Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Prunedale, and Hollister areas are once

again opening their homes to their neigh- bors and friends to collect food for the hungry in our communities. This makes for a great August ride, at a time when the number of charity rides drops (for obvious reasons). So hold the date, August 20, and I’ll have a lot more info next month!
