Sam Wo on Washington near Grant, our favorite Chinese restaurant from our salad days. Cheap and fast, it’s a Chinese greasy spoon, hot and satisfying. It’s in a narrow little building. You enter almost, but not quite, into the kitchen. Go past a chopping block where there was always a man slicing up ingredients (in those days he had a cigarette always dan- gling from his lips the ash threatening the food) and up rickety stairs to the upper floors where food comes up in a dumb waiter. Our favorite was tomato beef chow mein. It tastes the same now, but Edsel Ford Fong, called “world’s rudest, worst, most insulting waiter,” is long gone. What a kick he was. He was kind of famous, notorious, I guess (
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Edsel_Ford_Fong). We went there often enough that he showed us his scrapbook filled with stories about him. I smile as I write this.
SAMWO’SIN CHINATOWN
Then we drove around town, getting out to walk around our old California Street and Mission District neighbor- hoods. And we took a hike up to the Alta Plaza Park in Pacific Heights for some of the very best views of the city. An early, spare dinner at Fishermen’s Wharf left us enough light to skirt the Bay stopping under the Golden Gate Bridge and then taking the Great Highway south to join I-280, then home.
