Corral Chatter

By Becky Riley. Corral Chatter

Spring has finally arrived…well, kind of! I have never seen so much rain in all my life. Just when the riding pen gets somewhat dry, it rains again! Geez! I do have to say that one of my favourite parts of spring is riding in the evening and smelling the lilacs. They have really bloomed in the last week.

The WHAO has been busy getting things rolling for 2011. Starting the season off with a two day show at Knowlton Ridge is a great way to begin. A beautiful facility with indoor and outdoor pens so if Mother Nature is still grumpy the show will still go on!

We are very excited that REACH Huron will be hosting a two day show for WHAO this year on August 6 & 7. Details will be coming soon. The Saturday show will be WHAO Point Awarded only. The Sunday show will be both WHAO and MWHS pointed. This is the first time that the two clubs have merged and I hope that it is a big success. There will be stalls and accommodations available. When we get that information, it will be posted on our website. The third show of the season is another two day show: Trout Creek Fair on August 27 & 28. With the price of gas increasing, it is so nice to have a full weekend of showing and camping! Two days of shows for the gas price of one!! I can’t wait to get out and show! It is going to be a great year. We will not get rained out…we will not get rained out…we will not get rained out…(if you say it enough times it comes true – right?)

Don’t forget that if you are a member, you only need to show in a class 5 times to qualify for the year end award. With all these two day shows, three weekends of showing and you’re qualified! If you would like to join, contact Mar- sha Tarbutt.

Pat Brundage Retires 2011 Membership Form

On behalf of the Western Horse Association of Ontario, I would like to thank Pat Brundage for her many years as a WHAO Senior Judge. It was an honour to have you as a judge and a plea- sure to show to you as an exhibitor. We wish you the best of luck in the future…now that your weekends are free!

LITTLE BIT WESTERN FEED AND SUPPLIES

One day membership $5 (does not qualify for year end awards. Valid only on date purchased.)

It is not everyday that a business in the horse trade gains recognition in the outside world, but when they do we would like use their example as an encouragement to others. Last September the Timmins Chamber of Commerce made Little Bit Western Feed & Supplies their Business of the month.

Seven years prior to that Claudette Chouinard took the plunge and decided she could sell feed for local farm animals. After two years of that effort she recognized a need for buying horse tack locally rather than online. She expanded in western themed giftware not avail- able in the area. Although business started grow- ing, she felt something else was needed and worked with a local radio station to develop a

name contest. The winner received $500 and inspired the name Little Bit Western Feed & Sup- plies.

Her business grew despite the many chal- lenges of being in a relatively distant market where she was just outside the main commercial district of Timmins. But with service and a per- sonal touch her customers kept coming back and sending their friends. Having earned the trust and loyalty of her customers she expanded to include pet grooming. We understand she has further plans to expand.

The horse trade can always benefit from enterprising individuals like Claudette Chouinard.
