President’s Message

Spring has finally arrived, as evidenced by the emergence of the trillium and the nasty little biting bugs that always accompany it. But that also means SHOW SEASON. We have already had the Reiny Season Clinic at Joanne Milton’s Rustic Meadows, which raised an impressive $1,331 for the O.R.H.A. The nine attendees had a great time with clinician, Bill Rinzema.

This was followed the next day by a Scribes Clinic, run by Mike Munroe and me, which was also well attended. The scribes were taught everything from dress code to etiquette with the judge to scoring, and then enjoyed a delicious barbeque lunch, courtesy of Joanne and John.

in a Green as Grass pattern run, with Mike Munroe, Lloyd Diehl and I as acting judges. And two of those participants, Liz Turnbull and Mary Tyrrell, each got to put their newly learned skills to workwhen they scribed for Judge Kathy Lopp at Fletchers Spring Thaw show on May 7th and 8th.

Will all the stalls booked, and a waiting list for more, we knew Fletchers was going to be a terrific show and it was a good kickstart to what should be a fantastic year.

The next show will be June 18th and 19th at Kemptville and please remember you will need a Coggins for your horse for that show. I hope to see you in the warmup pen there.

Then they got to put their new knowledge to the test as they scored the clinic participants

Safe slidin! Carol Ivey

Ontario Reining Horse Youth Association

The 2011 youth members held their elec- tions at the Fletchers Spring Thaw show on May 6, and Darby Mailhot was confirmed as Presi- dent, with Samantha Munroe elected Vice Presi- dent and Jesse Pecore acclaimed as Secretary. The first official meeting took place on Sunday, with 10 youth members and the two Youth Advisors (Dana Mailhot and Carol Ivey) in attendance.

There was a lot of enthusiasm and some great ideas for fundraising.

President Darby explained the Varsity pro- gram, and it was agreed that the O.R.H.y.A. will participate this year - their volunteer hours can

be used for the O.R.H.A. requirement, N.R.H.A. varsity and also for school community hours, so it is a win, win.

There was discussion about possible year- end awards and various suggestions will be explored further.

After review and approval by the O.R.H.A. Board, a Facebook Page for O.R.H.y.A. has also now been established and we encourage you to check it out.

Fletcher’s Spring Thaw

The weekend of May 8th and 9th marked another great horse show at Fletchers Horse World to open the season. The Fletchers were as effi- cient and hospitable as ever, and this year the weather cooperat- ed. It was a beautiful weekend and so we all made full use of the outdoor pen.

Steve and Laura Carr of Reinbow Equestrian Centre once again generously spon- sored Saturday night’s pizza party, and there were compli-

mentary donuts and coffee Sun- day morning for all exhibitors. In addition to a lot of familiar faces, it was very encouraging to see so many new ones too, and we look forward to getting to know you all. It was also particularly exciting to see a number of new youth riders – they are the future of our sport.

One of the highlights of the show was the lunchtime lead line and walk, trot classes – the little ones were so adorable.

An interesting piece of trivia from the weekend: In 1998, Larry McDougall won his first pewter on Sassy Patsy Pine on Mothers Day weekend at Hellyers, which is now Fletchers Horse World. This year he won a pewter class at Fletchers on her grandson, Foxy Whiz Kid. How cool is that?!

It was wonderful to see so many old friends again and hope to see everyone at the next show.

ORHA held a fundraising clinic on April 30th- May 1st in Hillsburgh Ontario at Rustic Meadows (facility owned by Joanne Milton). Bill Rinzema was kind enough to come out and donate his expertise as the clinician for this event to help and support the ORHA. Bill Rinzema, from Keene Ontario, has been a quarter horse trainer for many years, just in the recent past Bill grew an interest in the reining horses and decid- ed to join the ORHA. During the 2009 year Bill won champi- on in rookie professional on Roosters Royal Gal and reserve champion on Ghost Busterima, then in the 2010 year Bill won champion in rookie professional and reserve champion in limited open on Ghost Busterima. This clinic was designed for riders and spectators to learn more about reining and have the ability to speak to a professional trainer to learn new training methods and ask for solutions to any problem they may be expe- riencing with their horse. This clinic was designed for both beginner to advanced riders and green to seasoned horses; and the clinic attracted just that. The riders who participat- ed in this clinic consist of: Gail Gimpelj from Guelph riding Flash My Show Tips, Kim Dor- ney from Toronto riding Ms Lotsa Lena Twist, Cheryl Hodgkin from Amherstburg rid-

ing Lil Miss Rowdy, Sylvia Durocher from Stayner riding Are You Skidding Me, Susan Aiken from Orono riding Liquorice, Philip Lorimer from Mississauga riding Rustic Mata- dor, Gillian Joyce from Hills- burgh riding Rustic Reflect Olena, Judy Fulton Hines from Burke’s Falls riding Jesse’s Top Cody, Betty Wilkie from Elora riding Rustic Colorado Skip and Marlene Keating from Guelph riding Rustic Won New Twist. The first day started off with perfect weather and set a cheerful mood for everyone involved. All the riders tacked up and started warming up their horses and at 10am sharp Bill was ready to start the clinic off with his horse Chics Fine Shin- er, assisting in demonstrating the manoeuvres was Kim Larsen and Smarty Lil Juice (from Peterborough). Bill and the rid- ers worked on guiding/steering, circle and speed transitions as well as lead changes during the morning hours. Everyone riding in the clinic had a one on one chance with Bill while he helped them improve on each aspect of the manoeuvres. Lunch break occurred at 1 pm and thanks to the volunteers like Cathy Larsen and Mike Munroe the burgers and hotdogs filled the stomachs of all the hungry riders. After lunch they started to work on spins, fencing and sliding stops.

Sunday morning rolled around, unfortunately not bring- ing with it the beautiful weather from the day before, but the rainy weather didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. Mike Munroe lead the way through Sunday morning as he instructed every- one through a green as grass pattern, which each rider used as a practice run before getting judged. After lunch break Mike Munroe, Carol Ivey and Lloyd Diehl took the role of the rein- ing judges and with them a very helpful bunch of volunteers took the roles of the scribes. Riders learned a great deal about their horse and riding ability during the judged pattern; they gained knowledge of certain rules and what manoeuvres they excelled on and which needed more work. The scribes also walked away from this clinic with a bet- ter understanding of the scoring system and acquired a better eye in being able to assign each manoeuvre the correct score. With the clinic coming to an end and the trailers beginning to get loaded we say thank you to Bill Rinzema for being such a patient and knowledgeable clini- cian, as well as all the riders and volunteers for coming out and supporting the ORHA and we wish you a happy show year, and hope to see you again next year!
