HOT TUBS HELP THE 45 PLUS TO
Are spas the fountain of youth? New research in the United States has shown that hot tub hydrotherapy helps rejuvenate and maintain a healthy lifestyle for those of all ages but significantly those over 45 years of age.
Research from the North American Sports Medicine Institute show that studies on a 45 plus age group regularly using hydrotherapy spas reveal increased circulation, decreased stress on the heart, and, perhaps most interesting of all, a balancing effect within the autonomous nervous system that lowers stress.

ENTRAPMENT FOCUS FOR 2011 HANDBOOK
It adds: “Now by testing hot tub usage on different age groups we are beginning to see longer term health benefits. The significance of the 45 plus age group is that these are people who would normally be starting to suffer from major health problems, often related to work and to stress. “Over the last two years our studies show significant improvement in health developed from those who use hydrotherapy in hot tubs.”

The 2011 edition of the Pool & Spa Operator Handbook, known in the United States as the ‘pool bible’, has been published with more emphasis on preventing entrapment in pools.
It is produced by the US National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) and the handbook is seen as a fundamental training and reference manual for all pool and spa professionals. It is also a key teaching tool used by NSPF instructors when they conduct the Certified Pool/Spa Operator certification training. Available in both Spanish and English and in US and metric units, the handbook offers updated information on the Pool & Spa Safety (P&SS) Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations, the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) overview, and a list of all regulations.
Tom Lachocki, Federation Chief Executive said: “The Appendix has the most up-to-date information on key topics and regulations; we have included the information to continue to educate professionals who can help to prevent entrapment.”

NATIONAL FENCING LAWS IN AUSTRALIA ‘WOULD SAVE LIVES’ Australia’s Royal Life Saving association says a decision for a national pool fencing law will have the biggest impact on reducing child drowning since pool fencing was introduced 20 years ago. Chief executive Rob Bradley says a decision by the Sport and Recreation Minister’s Council to work towards national home pool fencing legislation is an important first step as figures show the number of deaths by drowning has increased by more than 15% in the past two years with more than 150 children aged up to four drowning during the last five years – half the deaths were in residential pools. Research shows 85% of home pools in Australia are either not fenced at all or don’t comply with current state laws.
