2011 SHOWS HOPE FOR ATTENDANCE TURNAROUND
Will 2011 be the turnaround year for Europe’s trade shows? The last three years have provided some of the toughest trading conditions for specialist pool and spa shows and it is no secret that show organisers are holding their breath that things will improve this year as signs of industry recovery throughout Europe become more noticeable.
Shows and specialist events have had to deal with lower attendances as part of tough trading conditions. Established events such as Piscine
in Lyon and Piscina in Barcelona, which every year provides Europe with its big autumn glamour event have seen exhibitor numbers reduced and lower attendances. The Barcelona show attendances dropped from 22,000 in 2007 to 18,000 in 2009. Lyon was hit by 50 less exhibitors last year compared with its previous event.
Piscina in Barcelona is convinced the recovery of the trade will mean stronger trading conditions this year. Said a spokesman: “The pool and spa industry has had causalities
over the past three years and this has been reflected in exhibitor profiles at shows all over Europe. When times are tough people tend to be less outward going in business and cut costs and we understand that. The message we have is that the business climate in early 2011 seems to be better than at any time over the past four years and that gives us some confidence. It is also true that we have to work harder to make sure we offer the visitors more incentives to attend – especially from abroad.”
AQUANALE FORUM TO FOCUS ON EUROPEAN POOL REGULATIONS
The 2011 Aquanale exhibition in Cologne in October is to focus its conference on two crucial European standards on safety and hygiene in swimming pools.
The four day show from 26 to 29 October, which is held every two years ,has always put emphasis on its conference and has chosen two themes.
The 4th Cologne Swimming Pool and Wellness Forum will look into how the industry is coping against the background of EN 15288 and DN 19643 regulations. It will also dedicate part of the conference to natural pools and swimming ponds.
The two parts of EN 15288, introduced in 2009, are having a major impact on both swimming pool facility design and management. All areas of
swimming pools are affected, from the widths of deck surrounds and drainage through to signage, drowning prevention systems and video surveillance. The Cologne event is seeking to discover how the European specialist trade is dealing with the regulations and whether there is any need for feedback on progress.
The second focal point will be DIN 19643, the standard which seeks to guarantee the
maintenance of hygiene, aesthetics and safety of waters in swimming pools in order to prevent the spread of infectious diseases through germs. The water is examined for a number of germs, including intestinal bacteria, pseudomonas aeruginosa waterborne germ which can cause illnesses such as outer ear infections,
skin infections and lung infections in the immuno-suppressed.
Four months before the start of Aquanale 2011, the German show organisers says they are confident of more visitors and more exhibitors this year. It is Germany’s only specialist trade show and although in the middle of a busy month for other shows including Piscina in Barcelona, the German specialist trade is known to be recovering well and this will boost the event. Aquanale will finish with a themed look involving the Italian market looking at the growth and expansion of swimming ponds and natural pools.
