OXFORD POOL CRISIS SOLVED

Oxford City Council members have agreed planning permission for a new

swimming pool which is set to end months of deadlock and debate in the city. The proposed new complex will include a 25-metre competition pool, learner and fun pools, and seating for spectators. The council’s leisure project has caused controversy as the new pool could close two pools, the existing Temple Cowley Pools and the smaller Blackbird Leys pool.

The council says they cost too much to run and the new complex would provide state- of-the-art swimming facilities for the south east of the city. Planning permission has now been recommended by council officers.

CORNISH POOLS ARE SAVED

Council chiefs in Cornwall have moved to save swimming and leisure services from closure amid biting cuts in Government funding by turning to charitable trust status. Over the next four years Cornwall Council must find savings of £170m as part of the 30% reduction in central funding.

As a result more than £1m will be shaved off the budget for leisure services that pays for swimming pools and sports centres over the next 12 months.

Joan Symons, the council’s cabinet member for customer first and culture, said: “We know how important these services are to people in Cornwall and wanted to find a way of making these savings at the same time as

continuing to provide a high- quality service.

WATERCO SEES EUROPEAN GROWTH AS IT CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY

Developing the multi award- winning MultiCyclone technology has been one of the key milestones for pump and filter specialists Waterco as it celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer Soon Sinn Goh said: “2011 heralds Waterco’s 30 year anniversary and as such, is an important milestone year. Our success has been founded on our innovative engineering as well as our efficient manufacturing processes, enabling us to deliver the best products.” Research and development remains a key focus and the company has developed an extensive range of products for the swimming pool and commercial markets, with milestones which include developing a range of pool heat pumps, cartridge filters and expanding its range of domestic and commercial pool pumps. The company now boasts one of the largest ranges of pool pumps in the world.

“Our European market is an important area for us. We are seeing signs of positive growth this year and there’s great potential in expanding further into these markets. I’m proud of the fact we are the only company in Australia which has gone international, riding on volume from a relatively small Australian market, compared with the much larger markets in the US and Europe”. “Waterco has an amazing array of products, and with our 30-year heritage of delivering innovations for the pool and spa industry, we are in a great position to provide our customers with the products and services they need.”

From its humble beginnings, Waterco now claims more than 25% of the Australian residential swimming pool equipment market with manufacturing and assembly plants in the UK, USA, Australia, Malaysia, China and Canada. The company delivers award-winning products to over 40 countries and employs more than 500

staff worldwide.

In 1981, Soon Sinn headed for Australia and set up what was then known as Dronaco, a PVC pipe and fittings company which soon expanded its product line to include valves and pool filters. Renamed Waterco, Soon Sinn then moved into the solar pool heating business, acquiring Zane Solar Systems in 1986, followed by becoming a distributor of Lacron filters from Weir Engineering. “That was the start for us,” explains Soon Sinn.

In 1983 Waterco moved into the retail arena, establishing the first Swimart pool and spa store in Sydney. After purchasing 10 SwimWorld pool shops and changing the stores’ name to Swimart, Waterco expanded the network. Today Swimart is Australia and New Zealand’s largest pool and spa specialist group.

Waterco listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1989, and since then has grown organically and via acquisitions.
