ISPE presented the 99th seminar the Watermill Hotel near Hemel Hempstead. The recent changes to French Law mean all privately owned swimming pools must now have a safety device in place that conforms to AFNOR Standards. The law is enforced by a fine of up to €45,000 and inspectors are checking swimming pools in all regions for the correct installation of alarms and barriers.

Specialist hot tub business Escape Leisure has moved its showroom out of Barnstaple into Trelawney Garden Centre in Ashford, which it feels is better suited to display and sell its range of hot tubs from Marquis Spas. The move was prompted by the arrival of a new superstore near to the company’s previous showroom, which, although seemingly offered greater opportunities for passing trade actually reduced visitor numbers with most shoppers driving straight past the showroom. “We now have somewhere more prominent and benefit from Trelawney’s top quality customers as they walk around the garden centre browsing,” said Chris Draper, Managing Director of Escape Leisure.

“We sold three units in the first three weeks after moving here, as well as carrying out numerous site surveys.” Occupying an 80 square metre site, Escape Leisure initially started with three Marquis Spas hot tubs on show, two of which are fully operational; a new 2011 ‘Wish’ model, finished in black, has just been added to the display. The showroom also stocks a full range of accessories and water treatment products for hot tubs and swimming pools.

At present the office and showroom are situated within wooden cabins adjacent to the display area but Draper already has a plan to expand. “Within the next 12 months I would like to develop a purpose-built internal retail unit

similar to the other outlets on site, to include sauna cabins and steam rooms, along with additional hot tubs including an external ‘working’ showroom,” he explained.

As well as supplying hot tubs, Escape Leisure offers a full package of services, carrying out full site

surveys to establish which model would best suit the needs of the customer, as well as installation and after-sales advice and support. Escape Leisure is one of a network of dealers offering the Marquis Spas range of hot tubs, available from Golden Coast.

Matthew Ransom from Procopi gave a presentation on Pool Safety with particular reference to the lengthy procedures involved in getting a swimming pool cover accepted for use in the French pool market in accordance with the Standard NF P90-308.

Matthew looked at different types of pool covers and showed the differing tests that each were subjected to, before turning to pool safety alarms, where he showed some examples of equipment which warns parents and others when someone has strayed into the swimming pool unseen.

LARGER PREMISES FOR AQUA-WORLD

Pool specialists Aqua-World started the 2011 summer season with a move to new premises that will provide the company with much needed extra space. The 3,000sq ft warehouse and office facility in Warwickshire will be fully stocked with the company’s ever expanding range of swimming pools and accessories that are sold through a growing UK dealer network. The company is owned by Tim Schofield and business partner Bruce Draper who between them have notched up over 50 years experience in instrumentation and distribution. “The move has enabled us to ensure we can consistently meet the needs of our dealers,” commented Tim. “We have adopted a much targeted approach in choosing our key partners and we have to make certain that we keep to our side of the bargain by making sure orders are dealt with swiftly and efficiently and that we are available to help with any queries our dealers might have.” As well as above-ground and in- ground pools, the company’s product range includes heat pumps, mobile and sliding enclosures, solar panels, counter-current units and much more.
