asteau is a commune that belongs to the
appellation Côtes du Rhône-Villages in the Southern Rhône Valley in France. It is one of only two communes that include fortified (vins doux naturels) and unfortified wines, the other being Beaumes- de-Venise. The grape varieties grown in this region are varied and include amongst others, for red wine, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, and for white wine, Clairette and the more interesting and floral Marsanne and Roussanne. The red wines tend
to be rich and peppery and offer great value for money. This is the style of wine offered by talented vigneron André Roméro from Domaine la Soumade, who Robert Parker recently described as ‘the Superstar of Rasteau’. Interestingly, Parker also described 2007 as ‘the greatest vintage I have tasted in my 30 years working in that region’. Domaine La Soumade Rasteau 2007 is a dense, richly-
structured wine from low-yielding Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah vines. Roméro uses a combination of new and traditional methods of production, including extended fermentation, and the wine displays huge blackberry fruit, pepper, spice, chocolate and savoury characteristics. It also has very good concentration and length. This wine is an ideal match for rich, savoury dishes such as venison or game-bird casseroles.
