Pat a cake - pets help in recovery
A
cake sale organised by pupils at Sibford School has raised more than £100 for the Pets As Therapy (P.A.T.) charity.
Founded in 1983, P.A.T. arranges for well-behaved pets to be taken into hospices, hospitals, nursing homes, care homes and a variety of other venues to provide therapeutic visits. P.A.T. volunteer coordinator, Julia Sharpe, visited Sibford together with her dog
‘Teddy’, to explain more about the work of the charity, which currently has over 4,500 active visiting dogs and 108 cats at work in the UK. ‘Research has shown that the animals can really help recovery by providing a little
extra boost in addition to medical skills and nursing care,” she told pupils. ‘Sick patients often feel isolated, but even the most withdrawn seem to open up and let the barriers down when a visiting pet is around.’ Julia and ‘Teddy’ are pictured with cake sale organisers (clockwise) Martha Katz, Esther Hudson, Alice Abrey, Rosie Weston and Becky Sleath.
