Volunteering at Canons Ashby C
anons Ashby is a wonderful treasure in the heart of the
Northamptonshire countryside. Nestled in the hills, the medieval priory church and Elizabethan manor house, gardens and parkland are almost untouched by the modern world. Visiting Canons Ashby is a thoroughly enjoyable experience with a fascinating house, beautiful formal topiary gardens and parkland, coupled with the warmest of welcomes. The National Trust acquired the property from the Dryden family in 1980, and it opened to the public in 1985. Initially the house opened in the afternoons, but to meet increasing demand from visitors, from spring 2011 it will be open from 11.00am until 5.00pm. There are currently around 120 enthusiastic volunteers of all ages who give their time and energy for simply personal reward. The staff and volunteers are what make Canons Ashby so
special, bringing this fantastic place to life so that visitors want to return time and time again. It is not just about being a history boffin; here are just some of the many ways that volunteers can get involved: Room guides, visitor reception, meeter/greeter, events assistant, research assistant, raffle ticket sellers, church guides, gardeners, catering and front of house all need willing applicants. Canons Ashby owes much to the continued help and dedication of its volunteers. However, they are always keen to recruit new faces and would like to increase volunteer numbers to over 150. In return they can offer you a rewarding experience, meeting like minded people, new and useful skills that look great on your CV, discounts and free entry to all National Trust properties in addition they can contribute to your travel expenses. If you are interested and wish to find out more, talk to Chris Maltby, the Volunteer Manager.
Chris is a volunteer herself, and is a friendly face to give you any more information you need. Contact Chris on 01788 890576, or email

C
anons Ashby is a hidden treasure in the heart of rural Northamptonshire. Once the site of an Augustinian priory, the church is all that remains next to the Dryden family’s Elizabethan Manor House. Unaltered since the 18th Century,
the interior contains Jacobean wall paintings, plasterwork and tapestries. The beautiful gardens and parkland retain the peace and tranquillity of a quintessential English country house estate. Open weekends and from the 12th March: Saturday - Wednesday, entry fee applies, free for National Trust members. See website or info-line for details.
