called ‘The Talent Tour’ which they went on to win and in January they played in the final of the MMG Oxfordshire battle of the bands contest, in which they secured second place. Not content with this success they are now working towards a nationwide competition called ‘Surface Festival 2011’ The High Jinks have just penned and recorded their debut EP CD ‘See You on the Other Side’ which was launched at a sold out gig in Buckingham last month. The CD contains three of the band’s tracks and can be brought directly from them, through itunes and at local HMV stores. Along with trying to saturate the Four Shires area the band hope

to travel to different places across the country doing what they love. Josh commented ‘We just love playing gigs together and are generally having the time of our lives. Someday hopefully our sound might spread further afield.’ You can find out more about The High Jinks through their website www.thehighjinks.co.uk

he High Jinks are a three piece alternative rock/indie group. The group consists of Greg Bishop on guitar and vocals,

Oliver Cowley on bass guitar and Josh Stopps on drums. The trio met at the Oxford and Cherwell Valley college in Banbury and have been really good friends ever since. With each of them having an interest in music it was decided in October 2009 to form a band. Each of them chose what instruments to start learning and over the past year they have all worked hard to produce what has been a terrific start for The High Jinks. Late in 2010 they entered a local competition in Buckingham

n listening to the debut EP by local band The High Jinks

I must first confess, I was unsure what to expect writes Cathy Upton. I was however, pleasantly surprised. I was immediately reminded of the tones of American Punk/Rock band ‘Bowling For Soup’; a staple in my own CD collection. From the first beat of the first track, ‘Remember Me’ there was a vibrancy and happiness about the band’s sound, which made my foot tap and head bop. This track in particular has a very catchy hook, which after only one listening had engrained itself in my memory; I could quite easily imagine an audience shouting ‘Once in a lifetime’ or ‘Remember me, Remember me’ back at the band during a gig. This track is what I would deem ‘Radio ready,’ very polished and clean.

The second and third songs ‘Colour’ and ‘Questions and answers’

are slightly rawer in format. Greg Bishop’s vocals are less polished, which only ads to the tone and depth of the songs. Considering that this is a band that are, as yet, unsigned ‘The High Jinks’ really have a talent which would sit confidently in the Rock/Indie scene of today’s music industry. It is commendable that each song is original and penned by the band. The instrumental base is also solid, with guitars and drums a like, giving way for each other in order to let the songs ‘breathe’. This is particularly noticeable in ‘Questions and Answers’; with the opening of the song being Greg’s vocals and guitar followed then, at just the right time, by the onset of the drums and bass. This is my favourite track on the EP. For it is raw and edgy with a ‘grit’ I feel the previous tracks lack. I believe that if the band stays true to their musicality then they

have a good chance of conquering the Four Shires if not further a field. I for one will certainly be keeping an ear out for future material released by The High Jinks. For now however, I am happy to place ‘See You on the Other Side’ firmly next to ‘Bowling For Soup’ on the CD rack!
