Spring term at Carrdus T

he spring term is a particularly busy one at Carrdus School. It starts with entrance exams for a good variety of senior

schools just a fortnight after Christmas, with results trickling in all the way through to March. Put this together with snow, chicken pox and no sunshine, and you can appreciate why children (and staff) need plenty happening to keep them cheerful. There has been a strong emphasis on poetry this term. Each

February the pupils choose and perform poemsin front of an external judge. As usual, several children chose to perform their own poems, ranging from an ‘Ode to Spring’ to a thoughtful treatment of anxiety. At the same time as this competition was taking place, Year six were delighted to receive a letter from world-famous author Roger McGough in reply to their suggestion for an alternative ending to one of his poems. His comment:

‘Every time I read that poem in public, your suggestion will pop into my mind. Happy reading!’ Sport has kept us busy with netball, gym, hockey and cross country matches. Pupils can elect to join in early morning fitness training; three times round eleven acres is a tough undertaking, so it is not for the faint-hearted. Music: our singers and instrumentalists have regular concerts and competitions; last week we sang to patients at Katharine House Hospice and a cellist is joining the peripatetic staff. Culture got an international airing during ‘whole-school Chinese New Year week’, when the school went Eastern, with food, videos, stories, music and Tai Chi. Along with all the treats there is plenty of work as well, as the scholarships attest. Do come and look round any afternoon – or there is an Open Day in March. Just ring to arrange a good time for you.
