Desert Island Pix
Claireʼs castaway this month is Paul Cook, who takes a hair designerʼs look at the art world...
P
aul was initially trained as a hair designer in Oxford but spent the early 80s working alongside some of
the best in the business before setting up his own salon ʻHair Conceptsʼ in Banbury. The Salon is now not only celebrating 21 years in business but is also moving to new premises in Marlborough Road in the fi rst week of March. It is a very exciting and busy time for Paul and his staff. The re-design and rennovation of an old building has been a big undertaking but the results will certainly enhance the area. In between cuts I managed to get Paul to select the images he would like to have with him on a desert island. ʻLooking at art, from a hair designerʼs point of view, can be a bit like taking oneʼs work home! We are constantly looking at the shape, colour, texture and the lines of a clientʼs hair and features, and of course, this is exactly, how one should look at a painting. I have to admit though that although I love art, when I switch off after a days work I do not normally want to go looking for more! Anyhow here are my choices for Claireʼs desert island, on which she assures me, I will have no mirrors, scissors or clients, apart from some upwardly mobile coconuts!
The wonderful paintings of the Pre-Raphaelites have always inspired me. Maybe it is the gorgeous painting of hair that Rossetti, in particular excelled at? I would happily gaze for hours on his ‘Beata Beatrix’, painted as a memorial to his wife Elizabeth Siddall. The painting was inspired by Dante’s Vita Nuova.
Finally I think I would have to satisfy my design instincts, I love balance or the effect of balance created by an imbalance, and consequently I think anything by Piet Mondrian would fill this
need...It would certainly save me from sand
and sea blindness and keep my mind off those hairy coconuts!’ n Claire Reika Wright’s

Original paintings and limited edition prints.
Featuring ‘Other Worlds’, a brand new concept that takes you on a journey through a painting. This interactive art game and the animated film it has inspired are available on DVD from the gallery or online.
Photography is very much part of the hairdressing world and I am a great admirer of David Bailey’s work. His fashion photographs were totally innovative. This one of Jean Shrimpton, taken some 50 years ago for Vogue, is a classic.
