You will remember we funded a donation to Manacare of £1,000.00, to help with the post-tsunami work in
Sri Lanka. The following is Manacares annual summation of their work, which include what we have done.
Regards Jim
My dear Friends In my mind, Christmas is a time when we must reflect upon what we have done to help the world become a lit- tle better place for either one single person, or with some of us, groups of people. Is that idealistic ? We can all enjoy our lives and immerse ourselves indulging in discovering new ideals, or untrodden and new territories, but should we really be considering only ourselves whilst we are on this earthplane ? There is so much to do to help the world, being so sick for such a long time gave me time to reflect on many things Anyway – many of you missed my epistle last year and I apologise for that, I do thank you all for your kind words in asking for an update on my life, and wondering what had happened … in actual fact I spent nearly six months in hospital in England and one day before my flight to Sri Lanka I was given the all clear to return – PHEW !!! All projects were kept going whilst I was so sick, the Philippines project is thriving under Benny and Delia, and there are exciting promises in the air from Mr and Mrs Mark Saunders. Vera and Ben Els in South Africa are also carrying on with very important work feeding and caring for those who are really feeling the deprivation and threats under Governmental laws post-Mandela !!! Egypt and Siberia continue as does Chile. Here in Sri Lanka, the Village of Hopes and Dreams continued with thanks to Raja, without whose help we would not exist in Sri Lanka, although Raja kept the project running, advancement could not be made with me being overseas in hospital … However I returned with new determination in December 2009 and throughout this year, 2010 so much has been achieved, mainly thanks to regular supporters … Raminta and her clothing collec- tions in the UK, to Michelle for running the Manacare shop in Urmston, and to Mo and her nurses in Gibral- tar, and also to our regular financial sponsors. I am assured by many of you that these updates are not boring, I tend to think sometimes they are … but here goes. Firstly in the New Year of 2010 I decided to start to concentrate on making the workshops sustainable, with the possibility of keeping the school, the therapy units, and the medical units going, should we ever be in a position not to be able to bring in monthly funds. Firstly the Candle Making project was expanded and with five local women employed is now making magnifi- cent progress and supplying many local hotels and shops with their candles, from Heart Shapes to Angel Shapes to the usual round and square candles … thanks to the Bishop of Gibraltar we even had some Travel- ling Rosaries blessed by His Holiness the Pope, which were attached to candles. Enormous thanks to Bob and Val Mallorn for their mould contributions … both for candles and for soaps … Our Soap Making project goes from strength to strength under the direction of Ganga the Manageress of the project. Ganga takes pride in producing wonderful soaps, all made from Essential Oils … from Coconut and Vanilla, to Charcoal and Lemongrass, we have more than 25 essences … again in shapes from Angels and Christmas Trees to Hearts and Santa’s … in handmade paper boxes, or in pretty bags made in our own sewing room … We are now supplying many Hotels and Shops and tourists are calling from their countries asking if we can supply directly… Our Sewing project also goes from strength to strength making sheets, curtains, covering furniture, making bottle holders, bags, clothing, banana shaped floor mats, dog and cat beds, tissue boxes with a different, bar-be- que aprons, many many really unusual items. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Windermere, who have also helped us enormously in the past, our Jewellery pro- ject is ready to start. The rooms have been especially prepared and we have all the necessary tools and equip- ment to start … more next year on this. Our Montessori School continues with more and more children, our Dance and Drama classes have over 150 children and young people participating regularly. Due to lack of funds the Medical Centre is only staffed by Sujeevah our nurse, and our Ayurvedic Doctor, but in the New Year we have funding to employ a GP for one day per week. During the year we had an Introduc- tory visit to our Therapy Centre from Conductors in Hungary, they chose Manacare out of many other possi- bilities to base their Therapy work for cerebral palsy children.
