Bollywood Comes to Havering A

t the back end of 2010 the Inter Club

Group met to talk about, among other things, how the three clubs might organize an event to mark Rotary Awareness Week. We decided that the event should concentrate on the things that RI and RIBI are promoting at this time, namely the Purple Pinkie campaign and the Polio Eradication campaign. As we were kicking around ideas we picked up on the Indian Night that the Romford club had held earlier in the year. As we further discussed the idea we decided that as India was one of the few countries that still have polio that we would build our event around an Indian meal with the entertainment, and in this way we could call upon the experience of Dianne Thomson from Romford club. .

ianne still had the decorations, the tem- plates for the tickets and posters and all

the knowledge of her club‘s successful Indian Night. Our event had to take place during the Rotary awareness week so it did not give us a lot of time to get things organised. By working to the strengths and experiences of the members of the group and bringing in Subhash Hora from Hornchurch and Upminster (to advise and deal with the catering side of the event) the team set about the task of organising everything.

here was a lot to do, but by the last week in February all was in place and we just

had to wait for Saturday 26th. to come round. At 5pm on the appointed day a small but energetic team of helpers arrived at the Campion School Hall to set about transforming an ordinary school Hall into an Indian Paradise to feed over 200 paying Rotarians, family, friends and guest. It was tight going but we managed it (without any time to spare as guests were arriving as we were putting the finishing touches to the hall).

The front of the stage was beautifully decorated by Dianne‘s daughter and the tables looked an absolute treat (it is no mean feat trying to disguise well used and abused school tables). However, more or less everything we planned

worked out well and on the evening there were only a few minor things that needed ‗tweaking‘.

he food was excellent, the bar was well stocked and met the needs of all present,

and during a break in the entertainment Tom Thomson did a fantastic job auctioning off two wonderful prizes. The first was a helicopter ride for three from Aveley down the River Thames and back with a diversion (weather permitting) over the successful bidders home. The second item was a pool cue signed by the great Steve Davies. Tom also arranged the fantastic raffle which was drawn by our Area Governor, Peter Dowse. The star prize (donated by Chandler‘s Travel) was a villa for 8 to 10 people in Portugal for a week. The winner had to pay their own fares but this was a nice prize to win. The second prize was a mint condition sovereign provided by Tom. There were several other good quality prizes including a basket of wines, flow- ers, champagne and so on. This event raised over £1500 on the night.
