hilst having a welcome cup of tea we were able to view stuffed items being

exhibited, some quite stunning models of animals, insects and birds on display in a very modern exhibition hall. As like photo‘s above, although the photo below is a Rotarian

room, he had laid out a collection of maps, photos and objects dealing with a range of famous people and expeditions arranged and supported by the Society which included many famous and well known explorers. The presentation followed the explorations carried out by Livingstone/Stanley in the hot regions, with the cap and hats worn by these two great men at their famous meeting in the jungle (Dr Livingstone I presume etc.). We then followed the exploration of the cold regions with handmade maps showing the coastal areas, the Northwest Passage and expeditions to the Pole. Some interesting items included a boot recovered from the body of Malory who died attempting to climb Everest which had remained undetected for many years but was in relatively good condition having been preserved by the cold dry conditions on the mountain. One item of particular interest was a leather glove; we were shown a poster from the first world war of Kitch- ener pointing with a gloved hand and the slogan ―Your Country Needs You‖, this was that glove!

ur tour ended with a brief look around the reading room, thanks were given to

our hosts for making our visit interesting and informative. Those who were unable to join us on this outing missed a great opportunity to explore the fascinating artefacts in the keeping of the Royal Society in its World Centre for geography
