first edition. the publication of the present pamphlet arose from the adverse critical reception given to paintings exhibited by John millais and William holman hunt at the royal Academy in 1851. As a result millais asked coventry patmore to approach ruskin with a view to him taking up their cause. patmore did so and on the 13th and 30th of may letters from ruskin appeared in the Times defending the young painters. in addition ruskin wrote to millais offering to purchase his canvas The Return of the Dove to the Ark. in August of the same year ruskin issued Pre- Raphaelitism, again warmly praising the artists and in particular comparing millais with turner, an artist with whom ruskin had had a long association. ruskin’s intervention proved a turning point in the group’s fortunes. dnb notes that “it encouraged the painters themselves, confirmed patrons and picture dealers, and caused many of the critcs to reconsider their opinions.”

charles mcleish was the finisher at the doves bindery until 1909 when he left to establish his own bindery.
