privaely printed. the extra illustrations comprise portraits of nell’s contemporaries and plans and views of london. there are 6 portraits of nell gwyn (and other prints in which she appears). “the following story was originally published in the gentleman’s magazine, for the year 1851, and now appears as a separate publication for the first time: corrected throughout and enlarged with much new matter..... it must be read as a serious truth, not as fiction - as a biography, not as a romance...”

caran d’Ache was the pseudonym of


the 19th century french satirist and


political cartoonist emmanuel poiré. “caran d’Ache” comes from the russian word karandash, meaning pencil (of turkic origin; “kara dash” meaning black stone). While his first work glorified the napoleonic era, he went on to create “stories without words” and as a contributor to newspapers such as the lundi du figaro, he is sometimes hailed as one of the precursors of comic strips.

first editions. from the library of the cartoonist nicolas bentley with a copy of his reynolds stone designed bookplate. bentley has signed the first wrapper in pencil, and there are a few pencil notations by him in the text including one pencil sketch of a bearded man’s head.
