from the library of Walter Anderson with his bookplate. there was a Walter f. Anderson who was a music professor, concert pianist and composer, but we cannot be sure that this is the same man.

12mo. in a contemporary london binding of red morocco, the covers tooled in gilt with an all-over pattern of drawer handles, tulips, pansies, etc., gilt spine divided into five panels, the second lettered in gilt on a dark green leather label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; pp. x, 336; light rubbing to joints and a some light embrowning to text, otherwise an excellent copy.
rare. Wing cites only two copies in the uk (british library and plume library) and two in the united states (yale and univ. of california).
provenance:
a) ownership inscription of thomas Wentworth, 1st marquess of rockingham, (1693-1750), Whig politician, mp for malton (1715-27) and yorkshire (1727-28). purchased by him when he was at st. John’s college, cambridge (1707-1713) and then passing, along with the rest of his substantial collection, to the library at Wentworth Woodhouse, rotherham (i.e. the fitzwilliam library).
b) bookplate of William charles de meuron, 7th earl fitzwilliam, 1872-1943. sold at the sale of the fitzwilliam library at sotheby’s in 1948, where it was purchased by the bookseller sawyer.
c) bookplate of the bookseller William Alfred foyle (1885-1963), who apparently acquired it from sawyer for his own collection. sold at the sale of the foyle library held at christie’s in July 2000.
