176. KIPLING, Rudyard. the Absent minded beggar manuscript fair copy. [1900]. 8vo., single sheet of cream paper written in ink by kipling on both sides.

£4,000

A signed manuscript fair copy by kipling of his poem The Absent Minded Beggar. sometime folded and with the remains of a postage label and postal frank on the back.

kipling was zealous in promoting his poem, The Absent Minded Beggar, as all profits went to charity. the appearance of this fair copy on a used piece of paper leads us to believe that he executed it in an impromptu manner, possibly on request. the frank on the paper is dated Jan 25 1900, 3 months after the poem had been written.

“the Absent-minded beggar” famously set to music by sir Arthur sullivan was written as part of an appeal by the daily mail to raise money for soldiers fighting in the south African War and their families. the fund was the first such charitable effort for a war. the chorus of the song exhorted its audience to “pass the hat for your credit’s sake, and pay— pay— pay!”

the patriotic poem and song caused a sensation and was constantly performed throughout the war and beyond. kipling was offered a knighthood shortly after publication of the poem but declined the honour. vast numbers of copies of the poem and sheet music were published, and large quantities of merchandise were sold to aid the charity. the “Absent minded beggar fund” raised a total of about £250,000.
