first edition. clarke’s second imitation of dickens’s christmas numbers of All the Year Round, the last of which had appeared two years before this in 1867. in 1868 he had issued A forecastle frolic: Being an extra Christmas number conducted by Charles Clarke. charles clarke is best know for his sporting novels.

8vo., sometime finely bound by bayntun in full double gilt line panelled dark blue morocco, spine panelled and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, with original red cloth cover laid down and bound in at rear; with frontispiece of sherlock holmes by frank Wiles; externally near fine, with a suggestion of fading to spine; internally generally very good with a circular area of paper restoration (20mm x 10mm) to fore-edge margin of contents leaf with some adjacent thinning of stock and a similar area of thinning to title- page, presumably to remove ink stamps, otherwise clean and sound.
first u.k. edition, issued 3 months after the u.s. edition.
