Johnston limited after r.h. rowe tipped onto upper pastedown and 6 corresponding ‘transparencies’ [i.e. folding printed overlays on tracing paper] in rigid pocket on lower pastedown, 6 statistical charts printed in red and black, 5 folding, 57 half-tone plates, letterpress tables in the text; minimally rubbed and marked, front free endpapers repaired, folding map and 2 charts with skilfully-repaired short tears, occasional light spotting, otherwise a very good copy.
First edition. maxwell (1875-1946) studied law at glasgow university before qualifying as a solicitor and was then appointed Assistant district commissioner in the gold coast in 1902, becoming travelling commissioner in 1905 and provincial commissioner in 1907. in 1923 he was appointed secretary for native Affairs, and also acted as governor, colonial secretary, Attorney-general, and solicitor-general. the preface to The Gold Coast Handbook states that, ‘this publication is not intended to be a popular guide book to the gold coast and its dependencies, but is designed primarily as a book of reference for business men, officials and others, containing in a concise and handy form precise, accurate and up-to-date information as to the trade, resources, labour, administration, legal system, climate, etc., of the country. the aim has been to include in one volume information and vital statistics, which in the past have only been obtainable from many sources and publications’ (preface). the work seems to hae been successful in its intention, and a second
