15 vols. contained in separate slipcase within a dark blue cloth-covered box; each volume bound in quarter dark blue leather over decorative marbled paper-covered boards housed within slipcases with similar finish, all edges gilt, with blue satin ribbon markers; the titles illustrated by the original artists in monochrome, the books printed on fine quality paper especially manufactured by the donside paper company, Aberdeen; a fine set, unused.
this set was limited to only 500 numbered editions, of which this is no. 29. it was produced to commemorate the 75th anniversary of dahl’s birth. unfortunately he died during its production and was therefore unable to sign the limitation leaves. the titles included are: charlie and the chocolate factory; James and the giant peach; fantastic mr. fox; the magic finger; charlie and the great glass elevator; danny, the champion of the World; the twits; george’s marvellous medicine; the bfg; the Witches; boy going solo; matilda; esio trot; the Wonderful story of henry sugar.

First edition thus, no. 947 of 1,500 copies signed by Gibbings. A finely- illustrated edition of darwin’s Journal, based on the John murray edition of 1845, with an introduction by sir gavin de beer (1899-1972), who was successively reader in embryology and professor at university college, london, then director of the british museum (natural history), and, in 1958, president of the fifteenth international congress of Zoology; de beer was a fellow of the royal society, a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur, and president of the linnean society (1946-19494), and was awarded the darwin medal of the royal society and the gold medal of the linnean society. highly regarded as both a scientist and an authority on humanism and the enlightenment, de beer was also ‘an expert on the life and works of charles darwin’ (odnb), and the author and editor of numerous works on, by, or about darwin.

With 6 exquisite hand-coloured pochoir plates by robert polack. A little offsetting from plates, otherwise a fine copy in slipcase.
