small 4to. contemporary quarter dark red morocco, marbled cloth sides, spine lettered in gilt, top edges gilt; pp. xvi + 124; 77 wood-engravings by thomas bewick, these printed from the original blocks on india paper and mounted, title-page and frontispiece within red decorative borders, preceded by an engraved portrait of bewick, a mounted photograph of the publisher, edwin pearson, 2 mounted photographs of notes by J. bell relating to the original edition, and a photograph of the title-page and frontispiece of the original edition; printed on vellum throughout; an excellent copy, with the engraved armorial bookplate of richard lawrence pemberton.
limited to 250 copies, “inclusive of 25 copies specially illustrated with extra cuts, photographs, ms. notes, portraits, autographs, etc. etc.” this copy is one of “two extra copies specially printed on thin writing vellum.” bewick’s engravings are printed from the blocks used for his original edition published by thomas saint of newcastle in 1779.
