fifth edition. from the library of rudyard kipling with his 1894 bookplate designed by his father pasted in upside down at the rear of the book.


kipling moved into bateman’s in 1902 and immediately enjoyed the gardens and land around the house. over the years his interest in gardening grew with the result that in 1910 he joined the east sussex natural history society, under whose auspicess he held a flower show at bateman’s. over 1000 people attended and the lawns were so badly scuffed that the event was not repeated.

first edition. the first printing consisted of approximately 2,500 copies, of which the majority were destroyed as a result of the court action against the book. roberts estimates the number to have survived to have been 821 copies.


in 1989, the novel was adapted into the uk film The Rainbow, directed by ken russell who also directed the 1969 adaptation Women in Love.
