folio. contemporary dark red morocco by baumgarten, wide gilt borders to sides with alternating leafy stems and flower vases, oval onlaid centre- pieces to both covers with gilt flame tools, cherubim and central sacred monogram, fully gilt spine with 6 raised bands, later marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; engraved frontispiece of st. paul’s cathedral, title printed in red and black, text ruled in red throughout; the frontispiece is laid down and has some expert restoration at the head, title-page and following leaf also have some expert restoration at the head and a few leaves have been cleaned.
loosely inserted is a copy of a letter from mirjam foot on british library notepaper identifying the binding as the work of John baumgarten. Johann ernst baumgarten (fl. 1759-82) was a german binder working in london whose work had a considerable influence on english binding. When he died in 1782 he was succeeded in business by the equally famous kalthoeber who had been employed by baumgarten.
