KILLER WHALE

In cooperation with architects ECE Projek- tmanagement, Ansorg has succeeded in creating a lighting concept that is coherent and underscores the special nature of the Rhein-Galerie shopping centre in Ludwig- shafen.

Water is a luminous source of inspiration for Ansorg in this eye catching shopping mall tion.

passageway with about 130 shops and stores is located.

The location is unique in the region: the shopping centre, which was opened in September 2010, is situated directly by the former customs harbour with access to, and with a balcony view overlooking, the Rhine. Parallel to this, the embankment prom- enade has been redesigned and in front of the Rhine Galerie a public square with an urban look has been constructed. With this new address, Ludwigshafen provides an appealing attraction that is a real crowd puller.

Atmosphere through lighting scenarios and accents of light, air and water are the cen- tral themes of the mall’s interior. Beneath the membrane roof structure, over an area of 30,000 square metres, a two-storey shop

Ansorg was responsible for the manufactur- ing, project management, planning and control of the lighting solutions - devel- oped and co-ordinated by Ansorg and ECE on a customised basis in keeping with the architecture of the Rhein-Galerie. “Atmo- sphere due to various lighting scenarios as well as a decorative and highly accentuated general lighting” – those were the terms of reference of ECE for the lighting concept. To that end, there is a special focus on the use of the daylight that enters through the centre’s glass roofs, ensuring an open, friendly atmosphere in the mall’s interior. The ambient lighting is provided by means of special recessed Milieu luminaires with a small ceiling cut-out of 185mm in diameter. The luminaires are each fitted with two HIT 70W-840/830 lamps that support the daylight. In the evening only one lamp with a colour temperature of 3000K is in opera-

Large-area semi-recessed luminaires with a diameter of 1600mm shape the roof of the mall and likewise follow the lighting control system. They are equipped with fluorescent lamps. In the atrium, by means of their systematic colour control system, additional accent luminaires using LED technology make it possible to create scenarios with abundant variants that underline the adven- turous nature of the mall.

The focal point of the centre is the ‘Whale’, a striking luminaire structure, 16m long and 4m wide. Arranged above a translucent stretch film, the 750 RGB LED elements make possible a large number of dynamic lighting scenes that are integrated into the overall lighting control system. Along the peripheral areas, this impressive system of luminaires is equipped with 16 gimble- mounted luminaires ensuring that there is additional accent lighting. www.ansorg.com
