EYE OPENER / OVO, FÊTES DES LUMIÈRES, LYON, FRANCE
EGGSISTENTIAL!
ACT Lighting Design and Odeaubois have created an object with a sensory lighting and a scenography that concentrates, magnifies and diffuses positive energies. OVO was presented to the public for the first time at the ‘Fête des Lumières’ of Lyon, France, from 8th to 11th of December 2010.
The purpose of the installation is to offer a multi-sensory art object to which a dimension of a luminous event is added, provided by the plays of light and the visual and acoustic animations. On first sight the visitor sees the shape of an egg, the two gateways inviting to enter. This dynamic form is a combination of 24 crossed spiral pairs based on the Golden Proportion that is present everywhere in the universe, from infinitely small in the DNA helix, to infinitely large like in the cyclical movement of planets and galaxies. Symbolic associations spring to mind, suggesting the universality linked to ideas of birth, hatching or blooming, unity, perfection of a cocoon.
The visitor is invited to walk on the water to reach the interior, as if to vanish into a metaphysical mist. The watery surface reflects the egg-like sculpture, the lighting, and also the silhouettes of the visitors who bring the surface to life by their passage. Seen from inside the sense of intensity, of being drawn towards the sky, underlines the dynamism conveyed by the forms of the structure.
The LED lighting system uses only about 700W of continuous power to deliver the amazing lighting effects, less than a family watching TV together on the couch. The whole system is IP67 rated and no replacement of bulbs are necessary within the life of the project. Each diamond formed by the structure of the egg is lit by Traxon | e:cue RGB LEDs that projects upwards. The LEDs are separately adjustable so that the whole structure can be lit up, coloured, and animated. Inside the structure a vaporisation system is fitted. It diffuses a fine cloud of mist which spreads, crosses, and blurs the contours of the egg.
