BACK TO BUSINESS

The move back to Islington’s Business Design Centre proved a welcome return for many visitors and exhibitors at The ARC Show 2011

If there was a common consensus among attendees at the The ARC Show 2011, it was that the exhibition was back where it be- longed. After a two year stint at Earls Court 2, the show returned to its original home at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London and seemingly recaptured much of the energy that some felt had been lacking in recent editions. The fresh buzz came not just from the healthy collection of manufacturers and distributors who had come to exhibit, but also the panoply of bonus features on offer. The show provided a platform for a variety of industry needs and was by turns meeting place, launch pad and award ceremony. In addition to the usual tradeshow business, the BDC once again hosted a series of talks and seminars. The International Association of Lighting Designers ran their Enlighten Europe conference in parallel with the show whilst the Lighting Industry Federation of- fered a series of free talks to keep attend- ees up to speed on the latest developments in the lighting industry. The Lighting As- sociation were also helping to educate with practical advice in their Lighting Controls Demonstration Area.

There were introductions to be made and alliances to be announced: Alliance Light- ing used the show as their official launch, displaying a selection of their brand, includ- ing Vode, Filix, Whitegoods, Technilum and Lumenpulse; new low-resolution LED display company Light Emissions was unveiled; Ar- row Electronics agreed to use its extensive distribution network to distribute Carclo Optics lighting products in the EMEA region; and EcoSense Lighting toasted its signing as authorised distributor for Architainment Lighting’s line of specifier-grade LED light- ing solutions for commercial and residential applications. The ARC Show was also a place to celebrate young talent. As well as the final round of the SLL Young Lighter competion (see over- leaf), the best Product Design students from Brunel University showcased their short- listed entries in the annual architectural lighting challenge. This year’s challenge, set by Remote Control Lighting was to develop an innovative LED architectural light fit- ting. Though Kat Harris was announced as the eventual winner - her iris mechanism for changing a fixture between as spot and ambient light winning over the judges - all

participants were praised for their imagain- ative ideas; an encouraging sign for the future of the lighting design industry. Next year’s dates have been announced as 29 February - 1 March 2012. www.thearcshow.comn
