TASTEFUL DESIGN
Mazzo is not a new name to the denizens of Rozengracht in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam. Until six years ago, it was the name of a famous - some say notorious - nightclub that stood on the street, so it is with a slight air of mischief that operator IQ Creative adopted the name when convert- ing the old club venue into a family friendly diner. Award-winning design firm Concrete Archi- tectural Associates was tasked with creating a new interior for the old Mazzo shell. Their scheme fills the space with a raw collection of concrete, brickwork, pinewood and steel, warmed up with the addition of some taste- ful designer light fixtures. Mazzo is a typical Amsterdam building: a series of narrow, deep spaces - each with different floor and ceiling levels - fused together into an intelligently packed space. The first section has a five-metre high ceil- ing, allowing room for the Mazzo sign to
Intimate lighting help Concrete Architectural Associates reinvent a notorious club venue as Amsterdam’s freshest diner
be written out in a carnivalesque arrange- ment of tungsten lightbulbs - visable from Rozengracht through the venue’s glass door frontage. The area houses a bar, where guests can order a quick espresso or take drinks at one of the high tables. Lighting from GUBI’s Bestlite series creates a ‘living room’ intimacy in this space. ‘xs’ versions are used as wall lights above a nine-metre long chesterfield couch and as pedants above the bar. These are echoed by ‘XL’ pendant versions, positioned above the high bar tables near the entrance. The second section, lower and twice the width of the first, is divided in two by con- crete columns. The part receiving the least natural light has been converted into the kitchen while the rest of the space serves as a restaurant with a simple but flexible trat- toria-like table arrangement. Five Dear Ingo fixtures from MOOOI hang throughout this section. Placed independent of the table
arrangement, these modern angle-poise chandeliers provide a pleasant, intimate il- lumination of the dining space below. A cosy ‘boardroom’ next to the kitchen, complete with a TV and fireplace and dominated by a large Bestlite pendant above the dining table, provides a more private area that can be closed off for family dinners or business meetings. A third section is set at the back of the ven- ue where the building narrows. Here a small backroom forms a space where, during the day, children can play under the watchful eye of their parents. At night the toys are hidden away and guests are able to retreat to the the eleven-metre chesterfield. Again, Bestlite xs wall fixtures are used. The overall effect is to create a gentle homely feel to the sapce - a far cry from the Mazzo of old.
