PROJECT / SAFFIRE RESORT, TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA

that glows to provide ambient light. The adjacent lounge is generally lit by indi- vidual floor standards that have a focused projection of light to the seating groups. The bar itself is lit from above by simple black surface mounted adjustable halogen fixtures.

The ‘prefunction’ space on level one is lit by semi recessed downlights where the lamp is heavily masked to comply with the rationale noted elsewhere. A boardroom adjacent is a multi purpose space, and accordingly combines lighting from pendants, down lights, decorative wall washing (halogen) and functional wall washing (fluorescent). A control panel provides a range of scenes to meet the various uses of the room. Light- ing scenes are also coordinated via the AMX system.

The spa is generally low lit to create intimate mood. At reception, lighting is a mixture of feature floor light and integrated display lighting. Circulation is lit by a varia- tion of the lift wall light – custom designed wall bracket light. In the treatment rooms lighting is indirect, and separately control- lable for various ‘scenes’. Flush recessed CFL wall lights provide a soft feature to the walls, with additional illumination from linear fluorescent lighting integrated into the joinery.

There are twenty individual suites at the resort that are all very luxurious. Great emphasis was placed on maintaining discreet methods of illumination, in combination with decorative fixtures.

The ceiling is clear of any lighting; general illumination is provided by a LED linear source mounted to the top of a main wall on one side, washing the ceiling. Other illumination comes from joinery integrated lights and FFE items. An LED marker light provides night light access to the bath- room. In the shower a feature is provided by light integrated with the shower head, so light is transmitted through the water cascade. Each suite has a deck that features a custom designed ‘lantern’ that integrates

an in-ground uplight with a decorative wire element. Diffuse light is reflected across the deck avoiding visible light from the Coals Bay township.

Lighting to the exterior is deliberately very limited in order to preserve darkness of the environment as much as possible. With the exception of modest lighting to a small planter bed at arrival (all downcast) there is no feature lighting of planting. The suite walkways are illuminated with a single 3W LED at 3m centres recessed into the canopy legs, aimed down and managed via presence detection. Some additional illu- mination is provided at each blade (service node). An uplight is contained by the canopy overhead so there is no waste into the sky. Custom ‘jewel’ glass bollards were devel- oped for key access ways into the build- ing. These are glass (9mm) cylinders with crushed glass inside. The fittings utilise a standard in-ground halogen uplight (35W IRC) and so the technical aspect is simple and proven.

Complementary walkways are lit by CFL in an asymmetric surface downlight. At the car park, an induction coil in the road activates the car park bollards from vehicular traffic. The bollards provide asymmetric downlight with no upward spill. An illuminated button provides pedestrian activation of these lights.

The entire lighting system is managed by Philips Dynalite dimmers and control. Scenes are generally time clock or presence man- aged, with over-ride panels at each area. A master touch screen panel is mounted at reception.

This careful blending of environment, structure and design has resulted in a build- ing which is both intelligent and inviting. This concept of light and shade typifies PointOfView’s lighting design of Saffire which won the 2010 IES Excellence Award. The purposeful application of light demon- strates that what you do not light is just as important as what you do. www.pov.com.au

ITALIANO
