HMRC Incorrect Notice of Coding
The Director General of Personal Tax at HMRC has written a letter of apology to the Ministry of Defence Permanent under Secretary to update him about incorrect notices of coding sent out to Armed Forces Disability Pensioners which implied that they would be paying taxes on their pensions in 2010/11. She acknowledged that this should not have been the case because these pensions are exempt from taxation and she apologises for any concern and distress the incorrect notices may have caused. The problems arose due to the way in which HMRC’s new computer system dealt with incorrect or non-matching historical data from the previous system. The records of all

Congratulations
Congratulations to John and Daisy Shaw of Bilborough, Nottingham, who celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on New Year’s Eve 2009. In 1945, John enlisted into The Sherwood Foresters and served in Italy and Austria until April 1948 when he transferred to the Loyals and then RAOC. John and Daisy have three children, John, Paul and Annette. Coincidentally, Paul works as Storekeeper SQMS for 350 Regiment Royal Engineers in the same building as RHQ Mercian (Nottingham Office).
26,520 Armed Forces Disability Pensioners were reviewed and corrected in March and these pensions will not be taxed in 2010/11, in accordance with legislation.
The Missing Silver
A former Forester officer, Mike Atkinson, who now lives in Ilkley and who has been out of touch with the regiment for over fifty years until Ralph Holden tracked him down a year or two ago, tells a strange story of the disappearance of some regimental silver.
When the 2nd Battalion was formed in 1952, a decision was needed as to how the mess silver was to be apportioned between the two Battalions. Letters passed between Germany and the Middle East but, by 1953, it was becoming clear that certain items which senior officers recalled were in neither theatre. Where were they? The older officers recollected seeing them in this posting or

that but no-one could remember them after about 1943 - or whenever it was that Greece was evacuated. There was a hunch that they could be somewhere in Crete or, more likely, Cyprus. Mike Atkinson and a Corporal were briefed to go to Cyprus and search for any news of them. It all sounded like a good jolly so, as it got nearer to the time to go, it was with some disappointment that, out of the blue, the Battalion got a message from Barclays Bank in Haifa. “What were they to do with this large box in their basement with the Regiment’s name on it? Oh, and would we find it at all convenient to make a little contribution to the rather large back rental which we seemed to owe?” So, that was the end of that. Mike Atkinson came back to UK on demob in August 1953 and heard no more. He still wonders whether or not it was just an enormous wind-up!
