Of Tamworth on 20 May 2009. Tony served with 1st Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment in the 1960s and 1970s. He was CQMS of C Company in Dover in 1973 and was later CSM of Support Company in Colchester in 1978. He completed his regular service with C Company 1st Battalion The Mercian Volunteers in Burton-upon-Trent as SPSI and later spent many years in the Army Recruiting Office in Burton.
LAMB Raymond Adrian Pte 24848528
Of Kidderminster on 3 June 2010 aged 37. Born on 5 September 1972, he enlisted into The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment in March 1989 and served until January 1994.
LANCASTER John Col DL
Of Knowbury, Shropshire, on 20 February 2010 aged 91. John enlisted into 2nd/6th Battalion The South Staffordshire Regiment before the start of WW2. He was commissioned into the 1st Battalion in 1940 and served with them until 1943. He was posted to General Wingate’s Headquarters and was with them during the Second Chindit Campaign in 1944. He served, also, with 1st/ 7th Queens in 1945. After the War, he was a partner in Jordan & Lancaster Woodworking Engineers. He became involved with the Army Cadet Force and commanded 5th Staffordshire Cadet Regiment. He became Honorary Secretary of the Chindits Old Comrades Association, he was Chairman of the Friends of the Regiment, he was Sponsor Officer for HQ Company 1st Battalion The Mercian Volunteers and he was also involved with SSAFA.
LEACH Albert CSgt
to Trincomalee. They were en route for landings in Malaya and Penang when the Armistice was signed. Albert remained in Singapore until he was posted to Colombo where they picked up the aircraft carrier HMS Indefatigable to Plymouth. He was demobbed in January 1947. He rejoined in August 1947 into the Royal Army Service Corps and was posted to Yeovil to join Transport Training Battalion after which he was posted to the Isle of Wight to the water-borne RASC. He was posted to 20 Car Company in Regents Park in early 1948 and, in December 1948, he moved to France as a staff car driver, driving General Belcham in Western Union HQ based at Fontainbleau. In 1950, he was appointed driver to FM Montgomery, remaining with him until 1958 at Courances until the FM retired; he then became driver for Gen Sir Richard Gale. After two years, he transferred to The Worcestershire Regt of which Gen Gale was the Colonel. He was posted to Lichfield when Gen Gale retired in 1960 and joined the 1st Battalion on on 28 September 1960 at Norton Bks. In November 1961, he went to British Honduras (Belize) to help with damage caused by the Hurricane. In December 1961, they returned to Worcester remaining there until December 1962 when they moved to Minden. He set up a Hotel for Ski Training at Garmisch Partenkirchen. The Bn returned to Lydd in September 1964 but moved to Gibraltar in September 1965: the Battalion remained there until May 1966. He came home to be CQMS 19 Bde HQ at Colchester until he retired in June 1968. He then worked for Smiths Industries and Doughty Scales as a Customer Liaison Manager after which he managed a shop. From 1975 until 1988, he was Housing Officer for Havant Borough Council Civic Offices.

in 1944 and in Palestine again after the War. After leaving the Army, he worked as an Ambulance Controller in Stafford.
LYNALL Stanley Charles
Of Stafford in the autumn of 2009. He served in the Staffordshire Regiment Band.
MADDOCKS Samuel “Sam” Pte 4973874 Of Spondon on 29 May 2009 aged 91. He enlisted into The Sherwood Foresters in March 1934 and served with the 1st Battalion. Sam disembarked with A Company from H T Dorsetshire at Kingston, Jamaica, in 1935. He served in Palestine and was taken prisoner at the Fall of Tobruk to be held POW in various camps, the last known camp being Stalag 11B at Fallingbostel. After the war, Sam joined Royal Mail for whom he worked for 30 years; on retirement, he enjoyed working on his allotment where he grew fruit and vegetables.
MALIR Robert Lt
Of Nottingham on 6 December 2009. Lt Malir served initially with A Company (Stockport) and, finally, with D Company (Nottingham) The Mercian Volunteers. He was a very keen golfer and was a member of the Mercian Volunteers team which won the Brigade Golf Competition at Lichfield.
MARSH John Herbert Pte 19154960
Of Allenton, Derby, on 9 October 2009 aged 80. He enlisted into the Airborne Division in March 1947 and, after two months, was transferred to The Sherwood Foresters, serving in Northern Ireland and BAOR. He was discharged on medical grounds in 1951 having received serious burns in an accident. He then found a employment as a vehicle plant fitter.
Of Royal Hospital Chelsea on 16 April 2010 aged 84. Albert Leach was born in Northleach on 4 April 1926. He enlisted at Bristol into the Royal Marines on 3 August 1943 and was posted to Depot Royal Marines at Lympstone. He did further training at Dolbitch in Devon and then he moved to Towyn for seamanship in Landing Craft Assault. In early 1944, he moved to Westcliffe on Sea and, later on, to Loch Fyne and Inverary (the King of Norway was living there at the time) for Commando training. They returned to Westcliffe and were posted to Bombay in early 1944. He underwent jungle training and Landing Craft training in Domba at HMS Graganza and was posted to Cochin in southern India for field training. They moved to Madras for a short time before moving to Caclutta. They switched to Mechanised Landing Craft training in Chittagong and took part in the landings at Akier and Chalk Pew. They were withdrawn

Of Mansfield on 24 August 2010 aged 68. After enlisting into 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters at Budbrook Barracks in 1958 as a Band boy, he later served with A Company in Malaya. He was later moved to C Company and served in Northern Ireland and Colchester. After discharge in 1964, he took up employment with Peak Drilling Services and the Coal Board. He was a staunch member of the Sherwood Foresters Malaya Veterans’ Branch and attended their annual dinner and AGM.
LEWIS William
Of Fordingbridge on 7 May 2009 aged 93. He enlisted into The North Staffordshire Regiment in 1934 and, after completing basic training, joined the 2nd Battalion. He served with them in Palestine, he was in the BEF in 1940 and in Tunisia in 1943, at Anzio
Of Long Eaton, Derbyshire, on 7 August 2010 aged 61. He enlisted into The Sherwood Foresters in May 1966 and served with 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters and 1st Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment in Northern Ireland, Kenya and Germany. He was discharged from the Army in August 1997 having completed 31 years and 82 days’ service and he took up the post of RQMS (NRPS) with the 3rd Battalion at Foresters House until its disbandment in July 1999. He then went to work for P W Defence Ltd until retirement. Speedy was the webmaster of a computer site aimed at reuniting past members of the Regiment.
