a very successful March and Shoot in which the Company completed the approach march in good time as a single unit. This included Cpl Shaw from stores, leaving behind his blankets, and WPte Purdy, one of our Company clerks stepping away from her keyboard! With the introduction of WTS, the Company deployed to Beckingham training area for the first phase of Section level training. It was a baptism of fire for the Privates as the exercise ran tirelessly for the first 24 hours. Following a break and some much- deserved rest, Sunday morning was an introduction to CQB. Sgt Mee mustered his Platoon and prepared them for lessons and practice, ensuring that all those new to the Platoon would learn from those more experienced. Pte “three tour” Bramwell joined the team after several excellent demonstrations of how to do it. He impressed us with his ability to demonstrate how posted grenades are not effective with the pin still in!
In June, the CSM enlisted twenty of the Company for the charity walk from Crich Tower to Mansfield to raise money for a memorial dedicated to those fallen from Mansfield during recent conflicts. The sun was out and it looked like the start to what would be an excellent day. Health and safety was the first order of the day and the CSM ensured that the OC applied factor 50 and a baseball cap so as to avoid fellow walkers and passing motorists being blinded by the bald patch! The fifteen miles were taken in the Company’s stride, although the step quickened towards the end, which could have been down to the finishing post being at a pub in Mansfield! The Company raised over £650 in sponsorship as well as a good deal of publicity encouraging new recruits.
The Company returned to Crich in July to support the annual Regimental Pilgrimage. Saturday proved to be the usual busy day with setting up the event and rehearsals. CSgt “Bing” Simcox showed his brilliant ability with microphones although he regretted saying “How hard can it be?” after taking the best part of three hours to set up the speaker system. Continuing with his affinity with the microphone, as he took centre stage for Karaoke night in the local village, he proved his skills as a talented “pub singer”. The new Company chefs, Ptes Smith and Tuxford, managed not to give the Company food poisoning at the BBQ although this could have been down to the very keen and watchful eye of Sgt Develin. The Pilgrimage itself was very well supported and, despite the strong winds, all the tents remained intact.
With another eventful year for the Company, with this one also shaping up to be equally as exciting, C Company is still a force to be reckoned with!
