Major Dean Deputy Commandant
Deputy Commandant, Lt Col Chris Young, with fifty five other youth leaders from all over the UK were recognised for their community-based learning achievements. Admiral the Lord West of Spithead presented the awards at the CVQO Graduation Ceremony held at the prestigious Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, in front of colleagues, families and friends. Lt Col Young was presented with a City and Guilds Graduateship Award in Youth Management and Training, comparable to an Honours Degree achieved through his work as a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer.
Edward Woods, Chief Executive CVQO, praised the volunteers’ efforts saying: “The
qualifications which you have attained are held in very high regard. Not only do they demonstrate the importance and quality of the training that adults receive through cadet training courses, but they are highly valued within the world of work. We are immensely proud of all you have accomplished and, whatever your ambitions, we wish you well for your continued success. On behalf of all of us at CVQO, I congratulate each of you here today”. Lifelong learning such as that which is available through CVQO and the cadet movement remains very much at the forefront of Government thinking. Through its fundraising activities, CVQO hopes to be able to expand what it can offer to young people and adults alike.
The Inter-Service cadet Small-bore Championship Belper Shooting
The Inter Service Cadet Small-bore Championship, known as the The Punch and Shell Competitions, was fired on Saturday 27th March at The Lord Roberts Centre in Bisley. The quality of cadet shooting from all teams was commendably high and prizes were presented by Brigadier Alistair Deas MBE, Commander Deepcut and Pirbright Garrisons and officer commanding all of the Armed Forces individual logistic and administrative training throughout UK. Brigadier Deas represented, also, Director Royal Logistic Corps who had recently made a most generous donation of £5000 towards Cadet 150 activity. Cadets from Belper Detachment came in a very commendable

second place. Building on the excitement of the Punch competition, the Shell competition also produced a nail-biting finale with very different tactics from each of the teams: the ATC and SCC firers produced very fast times whilst the ACF were slower and more deliberate. The ACF approach paid off with a good win for the team drawn from Belper Detachment.
In presenting the prizes, Brigadier Deas thanked Captain Steve Ellis of the Council for Cadet Rifle Shooting for organising the event and Mr Ali Aitken of the NSRA for permitting the cadets to use the facilities of the Lord Roberts Centre and for the hospitality provided to the teams and guests. Also thanked were Mr Fred Terry, the Range Control Officer, and Mr Reg Burbridge for looking after the scores.
After six years’ Territorial Army Service, Major Dean enlisted in Derbyshire Army Cadet Force and was appointed detachment Instructor: since then, he has given 23 years of meritorious service. Commissioned in July 1990, he has been an excellent leader of cadets and adults and, somewhat exceptionally, he has seen service in all four companies of the county culminating in his successful command of D Company until, for health reasons, he retired from this post in January 2009. His professionalism, enthusiasm, high standards and personal example provided an excellent rôle model to hundreds of cadets and numerous volunteer adult leaders. He has made a significant contribution to the training, assessment and retention of many new volunteer adult leaders and to the training and progress of numerous cadets. His contribution has been above that normally expected of a volunteer officer and he is strongly recommended for the Lord Lieutenant’s Certificate for Meritorious Service.
RMA Sandhurst
On Wednesday 5th August 2009, 56 Cadets and 7 Officers and Adult Instructors made the trip to what turned out to be an inspiring day for all Derbyshire ACF to attend the Commandant’s Parade at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The Cadets had the privilege of marching across Old College Square before taking their seats to watch the parade. This event was made even more special as one of Derbyshire’s former officers, OCdt Stephen Howard, was on Parade; he was a Lt and Detachment Commander at Melbourne Detachment, D Company, in South Derbyshire. The visit concluded with a trip around Sandhurst Chapel and a photograph on the famous Old College steps before returning to Annual Camp on Salisbury Plain.
