as a Corporal in August 1946. In 1963, he was posted to Whittington Barracks as WO1 Superintendent Clerk. He retired in 1965 and worked for the Civil Service with The Department of Employment until he retired in 1989. After retirement, he worked part- time for The Department of Employment for a number of years. In his will, he very generously left his medals and a sum of money to The Worcestershire Regiment Museum and a further sum of money to The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment Association.
EDWARDS Peter John
Of Brereton, Staffordshire, on 8 November 2009 aged 75. Peter served with 1st Battalion The North Staffordshire Regiment between 1952 and 1955 in Whittington Barracks. After his service, he became a senior buyer for Thorn Automation at Rugeley and also worked for Armitage Shanks. He was a life member of the Regimental Association and a founder member of Brereton Branch, in which he took an active part. He died whilst carrying the Brereton Branch Standard of The Royal British Legion on Remembrance Sunday.
EVE Geoffrey CSgt
Of Whitehaven, Cumbria, on 13 September 2009. He enlisted in The South Staffordshire Regiment on 10 June 1946 and served until January 1968.
FENNINGS-MILLS Richard Maj
Of Elgin, Morayshire, on 23 April 2010. Commissioned into The Sherwood Foresters in 1966 he was posted to 1st Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment in Dover in 1968 moving with the Battalion to Berlin: he then Transferred to The Staffordshire Regiment. He completed a tour in Depot The Prince of Wales’s Division and rejoined the Battalion in Dover commanding the Anti-Tank Platoon in the North Armagh tour of 1972/3. The Battalion moved to Osnabruck and Richard commanded the Recce Platoon in 1974 in Londonderry and he was RSO on the 1976 Belfast tour. In January 1977, he became an instructor in the Anti-Tank Division of the School of Infantry at Netheravon. He went to Oman on loan service before attending Staff College in Camberley. He returned to the Battalion in Gibraltar and commanded A Company. In 1984, he commanded Support Company in South Armagh before being posted to Antwerp. He became Training Major of 1 Wessex (V) and he was then recalled to 1st Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment as OC HQ Company prior to the move to Ballykinler. He left the Battalion in 1996 and became Ground Liaison Officer, finishing his Army service in Lossiemouth in 2002. Known throughout the Army as “Dick FM”, Richard was an excellent sportsman, particularly cricket and rugby, and a talented pianist and painter.

Trent and the pinnacle of his success was winning the China Cup. His final service was with 3rd Battalion The Staffordshire in the Home Service Force.
FOX John Sgt
Of Sutton Coldfield on 28 May 2009. He served with 3rd Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment (V) in the 1980s and 1990s. His service included time with D Company in Walsall and Wolverhampton and with Recce Platoon in Burton-upon-Trent.
GODDARD Andrew Paul “Goose”
Of Bretby in April 2009. He served in 1st Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment and was in A Company during the 18 month tour of Londonderry in 1979 - 81, where he established a reliable reputation on the streets. One day he collapsed and was taken to the local hospital suffering from cancer and his Company was told that he was not likely to survive the night. He did survive and, after prolonged chemotherapy treatment, rejoined the Battalion and served for several more years. After he left the Army, he took part in weight lifting competitions all over the world.
GOLBEY Gary CSgt
Of Freeland, Oxfordshire, on 1 April 2010 aged 79. He served with The Worcestershire Regiment for three years and then with the Reserve for four years. Don was an accomplished Musician having been trained as a Bandsman with the Regiment; in later life, he became a member of the Witney Town Band, Stonesfield Band and the Chipping Norton Band. After discharge from the Regiment, he became Mill Manager for an animal feed company.
FOSS Robin WO2
Of Tamworth in March 2010. He completed his National Service with 6th Battalion The North Staffordshire Regiment and The Cheshire Regiment. Afterwards, he joined 5/6th North Staffordshire Regiment in Burton which, eventually, became 1st Battalion The Mercian Volunteers. He was a Bisley shot and rose to the rank of WO2, becoming Weapons Training Warrant Officer. He was a stalwart of C Company based at Burton on

Of Stoke-on-Trent on 19 November 2009. Gary enlisted in 1987 into 1st Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment. He spent very little time away from Battalion apart from one notable tour with 1st Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment which he thoroughly enjoyed and during which he made more lifelong friends. He served with 1st Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment in the Gulf War, on their Northern Ireland Tours of the 1990s, in Kosovo and in Iraq. He was universally respected and admired. On operations, he was a rock upon which many came to rely. Gary was also a fearsome boxer and was a member of the 1st Battalion Team which won the Army Grade 3 Novice Boxing Championship in 1988. Immensely strong and fit, he was awesome in the ring yet he walked quietly in his life being the perfect example of a gentle giant. He retired in 2009. He supported Stoke City and, last season, he was invited to watch them play at home against Portsmouth from the luxury of the Directors’ Box. His funeral took place at Crossfelt Presbyterian Church, Ballyroney, Bannbridge on Sunday 22nd November 2009. There were two memorial services, the first in Kidsgrove took place on Sunday 13th December, the second was in the Garrison Church, Whittington Barracks on Monday 21st December 2009.
