‘HQ’ Company by Maj A Neale

OC: Maj A Neale CSM: WO2 (CSM) Henney

As a cap-badged Royal Welchman, it is a great honour to be able to write on behalf of HQ Company for The Mercian Eagle. My predecessor, Maj Andy McLannahan, departed in January for the Intermediate Command and Staff Course in Shrivenham, leaving me with the considerable task of getting to know the highly diverse and operational essential team that is HQ Company.

There have been several changes in Company Headquarters over the year: WO2 (CSM)

The Quartermasters’ Department has had an extremely busy period since arriving in Germany, nine long months ago. The logistical pain of the move was considerable and felt by all but the HO/TO teams worked well to ensure a smooth transition. They were: the QM (T), Capt Lew Gayle, and RQMS (M), WO2 Travis in Germany and the QM, Maj Gary Piggott, and RQMS (T), WO2 Collacott, in Tidworth. My sincerest congratulations must go to all those personnel who assisted the move in both Battalions. A particular thanks must go to 1 RRF who made the takeover a lot easier by taking with them anything that wasn’t bolted down.

The QM’s Department threw themselves into the organisation of logistical support for the remainder of the Battalion, assisting in all forms of military training. Bergen Hohne training area and Sennelager have become like a second home to many of our members and we continue to look forward to the challenges of re-supplying those in need. We did, however, manage to take some time out to complete some of our own driver training by go-karting on the indoor track in Celle. Ably assisted by our civilian staff, the teams were drawn and the racing began. This was a timed event with the competition very close between the QM and RQMS (M); the

The Mercian Eagle

Henney is congratulated on achieving his promotion and Pte Robertson has been welcomed as the HQ Asst MA, amongst others.

The past year has provided a wide breadth of new challenges for HQ Company as the departments have adapted to a very different way of doing business here in Germany. A huge amount of effort has been put in by all staff for which they are thanked kindly.

More recently, preparation for BATUS has

taken centre stage with a never-ending torrent of G1 and G4 tasks to ensure that the battle-group arrives in good order. All staff have had to adapt and cover rôles that they may be unfamiliar with to enable the early deployment of the lucky few!

On the fringes, WO2 Henney continues to battle tirelessly through his continual fight to ensure that HQ MATTS and other individual training is not forgotten – no easy task.

Over to the experts.

QM was declared the winner with some very impressive lap times. This gladiatorial battle took place over 30 laps of the circuit and saw fierce competition from all. In the end, the two remaining drivers were the QM and the RQMS (M). This proved to all concerned that it does pay to own cars like Porsches and Mercedes SLKs. We wonder how many speeding tickets the QM has received honing his skills as a racing car driver!!

Once again, The Dept has had a successful round of promotions with RQMSs Travis

and Collacott having been selected for promotion to WO1. They have now moved to allow WO2s Rob Mears and Shaun Evans to assume their new rôles as RQMS (M) and (T) respectively. As for farewells, we have had to say goodbye to Pte Ling who has left us to pursue other interests. We wish him all the best in the future. We are looking forward to the challenges of BATUS and the future in Germany – and, if anyone wants to hire a marquee, contact Sgt Parker, the resident marquee expert.
