The Prince’s Trust is the UK’s leading charity working with disadvantaged young people aged 14 - 30 in the United Kingdom. Focusing on educational underachievers, care leavers, the long term unemployed and those who have been in trouble with the law, The Prince’s Trust offers solutions to help these young people to turn their lives around. The Trust has always had a relationship with the military – HRH Prince Charles created the Trust with his RN pension in 1976. However, in recent years, this has been formalised: a regular Army Major has been seconded permanently to the Trust as the Services Liaison Officer since 1994 and a formal memorandum of understanding between the Trust and the Armed Forces was signed in 2005.
Team Programme
Team is a unique personal development opportunity for 16 - 25 year olds. Its principal objective is to prepare young people for the world of work. During the 12 week programme, the Team members set personal objectives, take part in a residential activity week, produce community-based projects, undertake a work placement and learn how to plan for their future. The programme is run and managed locally by partner organisations known collectively as Delivery Partners (DPs). The Armed Forces support the programme through the secondment of their personnel (uniformed and civil servants) to act as leaders or assistants on Team. The three Services also provide ad hoc training opportunities to the programme including teamwork activity days, unit visits, leadership and development activities and work experience.
Secondment Options: ❱
Team Leader (TL) - A full-time secondment of 16 - 18 weeks: CRB clearance required
The TL, supported by the ATL, is the glue which binds the Team together. He/she will recruit for, plan and deliver the programme, acting as a role model for the members, providing leadership, motivation, advice and guidance. The TL is responsible for reviewing, logging and evaluating each individual’s performance, assessing their

coursework and dealing with discipline and health and safety. This is an extremely challenging role and is recommended only for personnel who are approaching full recovery and have previous experience of working with this demographic of young people.

Assistant Team Leader (ATL) - A full- time secondment of 12 - 14 weeks: CRB clearance required.
The ATL will assist with all aspects of the programme but has a lower level of responsibility. Depending on the DP, this secondment can range from a purely supporting role with little responsibility to working on an equal level to the TL. It is also possible to second individuals as an additional ATL – reducing the level of commitment and responsibility required. This role is recommended for personnel who would benefit from increased confidence and motivation before returning to the Armed Forces, or civilian life.

Employed Participant (EP) - A part-time secondment of 20 days over a 12 week period: CRB clearance required.
The EP role is a more flexible opportunity which is recommended for personnel who have other commitments meaning that they can’t meet the full-time secondment requirements. In this case, they assist the TL and ATL for just 20 days out of the 12 week period. Their dates and objectives are decided in conjunction with the individual’s line management. This secondment is tailored to each individual’s needs and the responsibility that they are afforded will be determined by their own experience and ability.
Benefits:
Soft Skills: The wounded personnel benefit from the same personal development opportunity from which all secondees on Team profit: communication skills, leadership, management, teamwork and conflict management being the most apparent improvements. However, for the WIS group, it has the added advantage that it offers them an opportunity to regain their own confidence and self esteem in a sympathetic and supportive environment before stepping back into a role within the Armed Forces or civilian life.
Hard Skills: IT, organisational and
planning skills are all key areas in which the individual will be involved throughout the programme and should, as a result, improve significantly.
Qualifications: All placements receive a certificate signed by HRH The Prince of Wales. There is also the potential, in many locations, to work towards an introductory teaching qualification as well as a variety of other basic qualifications such as first aid, City and Guilds units, health and safety etc. ILM accreditation will also available as a pilot from Jan 2011.
Challenge: Secondments with the Team Programme offer the opportunity to work in a completely different environment with a very different group of people. The secondment will be challenging but in a supportive environment with help available from a variety of personnel. The work is extremely rewarding – acting as a role model to the young people and helping them turn their lives around is extremely self-fulfilling – especially considering that the results are clear for all to see over the duration of the programme. The young people benefit from the enrichment to the Team programme that the WIS individual, as a role model, brings not only from their military experience but also their experience of dealing with severe challenges and barriers due to their injury/illness.
Help for Heroes Funding:
Whilst full-time secondments come at no charge, the part-time EP role costs £700 per individual. (£1450 if that individual is no longer serving). The Prince’s Trust has recently received a grant from Help for Heroes funding:
