The Regimental Museum

Should there be a Mercian Regiment Archives and Museum? In the same way that we now have a number of officers and soldiers whose first and only cap badge is MERCIAN, so we have enough items from Formation (photos, programmes, booklets, documents, standing orders, badge designs etc) and from operational theatres such as Afghanistan to be worth keeping for the future. Should we not be acquiring, collecting, cataloguing and displaying officers’ and soldiers’ uniforms of all types relevant to the Regiment? Should we not be conserving, storing and cataloguing documents such as war diaries, Battalion nominal rolls, Part 1 Orders, casualty lists, gallantry award citations and photographs (although most of these are printed in the Journal) and other documents? All of this will be of interest to future historians and should be preserved now. Should we not be seeking a venue and seeking to establish a Museum Assistant post now? Just a thought.

This has been an exciting year in Chester. The number of visitors to the museum has increased again despite the economic downturn. The new lines in our small shop have also proved popular and have increased takings. In addition to higher visitor figures, the museum has had a number of special events throughout the year. On 16th April, Maj Gen The Duke of Westminster opened a new exhibition room, The War Horse, which tells the story of the horse at war from the Medes to the battle of Litani. The room also contains video facilities which are currently showing “The Yeoman”, a history of The Cheshire Yeomanry, one of the Cavalry Regiments represented in the museum. The exhibition has already proved popular with visitors and should prove a great long term addition to the museum. We hope to add to the War Horse exhibition room in the near
