It is difficult to work out where to start when trying to describe what has happened over the last year when so much has. It seems like only yesterday that the last round of entries for The Mercian Eagle were being called for and it is funny to see where Headquarter Company last left off. In June, the Quartermaster, Maj Ronnie Goodwin, was able to hand over so that he could concentrate on his main rôle which came just in time to allow him to step back from the cohesion month for the first three weeks (funny that!). Unfortunately, Headquarter Company were slightly shaded out of the running for first place in competition for the Earl of Chester’s trophy (although not too far behind C Company in the overall

standings) but it was a narrow margin in a number of events, not least in the March and Shoot when the platoon from HQ Company managed to beat a number of the (far) younger Rifle platoons. The sports competitions were particularly memorable, especially for the sight of the Jackson brothers striding onto the rugby pitch for the inter-company 10s. An ambulance was on standby for both but, remarkably, was not needed for either.

Despite the conditions, the food was first rate throughout and testament to the quality of chefs the British Army produces. Kenya provided frictions that tested everyone. The Signals Platoon had to work out how to communicate around the 500 metre high Ole Kanjao mountain which was next door to Camp Gaffney, the Motor Transport Platoon had to work out how to get close to 1000 soldiers up to Ole Kanjao and the Quartermaster and WO2 (RQMS) Blackshaw were left to work out what they
