Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help The SSAFA Health Visitor offers a full Health Visiting service to families and their children ensuring continuity for families moving to Canada. In the absence of a school nurse, this service includes families with children aged 5-16. The Health Visitor also offers a service to any individual/couple who may require advice/support or health information. This service is also available to BATUS families living outside of Ralston village in Medicine Hat, Calgary or Cochrane.

Early contact with the Health Visitor ensures that any outstanding needs can quickly be addressed through support, liaison or referral, as appropriate.

The Health Visiting team at BATUS consists of a full time SSAFA Health Visitor and part time SSAFA Health Visitor Assistant who are located in the Ralston Village Community Centre. The service is confidential in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of professional conduct and flexible to meet the needs of the community.

Maternity Care:

There is excellent maternity care available to pregnant women in Alberta, however there is no community or hospital based midwifery service. The SSAFA Health Visitor will carry out an antenatal assessment and is available throughout your pregnancy to offer help and advice.

Immunisations:

Immunisations are carried out in Ralston village under the direction of the Health Visitor. Appointments can also be made at clinics in Medicine Hat or Redcliff if desired. The schedule is slightly different in Canada although all British immunisations are available. The Health Visitor will advise on any additional immunisations that your child may be eligible for.

If you are pregnant or have children under 5, please contact the health visitor as soon as possible after you arrive at BATUS. Pack your child’s ‘Red Book’ in your hand luggage
